Top Ten Anime Moms

-Written by: Blake Zahari

Mothers are often out of the picture in anime plot lines and at best are minor background characters. Indeed, an anime mom that has a prominent role is a novelty that unfortunately is not explored too heavily. That’s why in honor of those anime moms who are good parents, mentors, and actually alive after episode 1—we’re counting down the Top 10 Anime Moms.

10.
Yukari Takura (Lucky Star)

It is quite easy to see where many of Miyuki’s sensibilities come from when you consider her mother, Yukari. Aside from the obvious family resemblance, Yukari has a sweet demeanor and a polite sense of humor. She could easily fit in with Miyuki’s friends and become a fifth member of their troupe.

9.
Mari Katsuragi (The World God Only Knows)

A loving wife and mother, Mari cares deeply for her family. Being the mom of an otaku like Keinma isn’t easy since she can’t be sure at all if Keinma has any chance at a promising future. She owns a café and was once part of a hardcore motorcycle gang before she married. This may come as a surprise due to her current domestic appearance and usual calm temperament. However, when she becomes angry Mari reverts back to her past violent personality and the “Snow Witch of the Mountain Pass” is unleashed.

Chi-Chi (Dragon Ball franchise)

Many people may view Chi-Chi as a typical nagging mother, but that’s what makes her great. Being married to the strongest fighter in the universe makes for a life that is far from normal, and Chi Chi brings a literal “down to earth” quality that is just what the Saiyan men in her life need when they’re at home and not out saving the world. Although she wishes her family didn’t focus on fighting so much, she can more than hold her own in a fight and was responsible for beginning her youngest son Goten’s training.

7.
Moro (Princess Mononoke)

In addition to being a mother of three, Moro is the head of the wolf clan and a God who serves the Forest Spirit. As a result, Moro’s parenting skills are not showcased too much. Despite that, it is abundantly apparent how much she cares for her children, especially San, her adopted human daughter. Moro is wise enough to know San’s ultimate role between the forest and her human kin and she is willing to sacrifice everything in order to help her.

Delia Ketchum (Pokémon)

Also known as Ash’s mom, Delia is the consummate supportive mother. Always looking out for Ash while he’s on his journey, she is seen often offering any sort of help that she can provide to her son. Once an aspiring trainer herself, Delia cares for and understands Pokémon just as much as Ash does. She takes in a Mr. Mime named Mimey and even battles Team Rocket, taking them down without breaking a sweat.

5.
Sakae Jinnouchi (Summer Wars)

I’m cheating here a bit but Natsuki’s great-grandmother more than qualifies for this list since she is the unquestioned head of the whole Jinnouchi clan. She is a strong woman who is wise and steadfast, and has a vast network of friends and acquaintances that expounds her incredible influence and charisma as a person. Without spoiling the story, her motherly relationship with Wabisuke, the troubled misfit of the family, is arguably what truly makes her qualified for this list.

4.
Junko Kaname (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

Madoka’s mom is a shrewd corporate woman who is confident and determined, traits that her daughter does not share—at least initially. It is clear that Madoka and her mom share a special bond as they get ready for their day together each morning. Madoka asks for advice at various points, and her mom always offers an answer that is pragmatic but still inspires optimism. Without her, Madoka may not have grown or changed like she did throughout the series.

3.
Sanae Furukawa (Clannad)

No mother is perfect or knows what’s best all the time. What’s important is that they are there for their children when they’re needed most and Sanae embodies these principles very well. After almost allowing the unthinkable to happen to her family, she and her husband abandon their own ambitions and open a bakery to better care for their daughter, Nagisa. Despite her flaws, Sanae proves to be a loving mother and a dependable aid to those she cares about.

2.
Yasuko Takasu (Toradora)

Ryuuji’s mother is the kind of mom that is really annoying and embarrassing as you’re growing up, but over time you realize and appreciate all the ways she was helpful and supportive. A klutz and more than a bit childish, Yasuko is constantly tired and seemingly half-asleep. This is due to the fact that she works two jobs so that Ryuuji doesn’t have to work and he can focus on his studies. Truly, being a single parent is not easy but Yasuko does her very best to provide for her only son with all the support he needs to succeed.

Hana (Wolf Children)

If being a single parent of one is tough, being a single parent of two children is tougher. Being a single parent of two wolf children—that’s downright brutal. In Wolf Children, Hana’s experience raising her daughter and son is one of the only anime to feature parenting as a central focus. All Hana wants is to give her children a good life and be free from the scrutiny society would bring upon them if their secret was revealed. Hana is forced to make difficult decisions all the time but she always has what’s best for her children first in mind. Hana is without question deserving of the top spot on our list.
