Silver Spoon is the story of Yuugo Hachiken and his new life at Ooezo Agricultural High School. His journey his filled with new adventures as he joins the equestrian club and cares for chickens, pigs and cows. The characters in Silver Spoon are relatable and engaging. I greatly enjoyed Hachiken’s story as I learned more about the work and emotions involved in food production. Hachiken and the reader are exposed to the unique problems held by those with family farms, in contrast to experiences of growing up in the city.
I have also seen the Silver Spoon anime, so I already had a good understanding of the plot. Something that still surprised me is how often author Hiromu Arakawa uses sound effects. They are used like background art for the images, further emphasizing the constant background noise in each scene. The art does a great job of expressing the characters’ emotions and is full of activity and detail. I love this story and can’t wait to get my hands on Silver Spoon volume 2.
Silver Spoon volume 1 features story and art by Hiromu Arakawa.
