Shut-In Shoutarou Kominami Takes on the World Manga Review

Are you shy, lonely, a chicken? You may be Shlocken! Even so, there is no way you are as big of a Shlocken as our main protagonist Shoutarou Kominami, from Shut-In Shoutarou Kominami Takes on the World by Dan Ichikawa. Kominami doesn’t tend to leave his house but when his mom stops sending him money, clothes, and food he is forced to find a job. The only problem being, he is very socially awkward. Fortunately, there is a man, Taiga Kitazono, who is looking to hire someone exactly like him. Kitazono is a manga artist who is looking for the biggest Shlocken he can find so he can use him for interesting stories.

The main bulk of this book is Kitazono putting Kominami into awkward situations to see what will happen, all while Kominami thinks he is doing this to help cure his Shlocken-ness. Many of these experiences are simple like going to the hairdressers or helping at a pre-school but some of them are a bit more intense for him, like being an art assistant for a fellow Shlocken and going to a party/mixer. No matter what the situation is, Kominami accidentally finds a way to make it interesting.

This is an amazing manga that I would recommend to anyone who has the free time to read it. It is about 568 pages long and it is not an Omnibus, so it may not be the fastest read. Many of the characters in this manga are interesting and serve a purpose. Whether it is a character that sticks around for the whole book or just a chapter, they all feel like they belong. Even though this is a big book, there are no dead pages or chapters. The story keeps going with a nice flow and doesn’t get interrupted by anything that doesn’t need to be there. I will be ecstatic to add this to my personal collection. Don’t be Shlocken, pick up this book!

Shut-In Shoutarou Kominami Takes On The World Manga

After not leaving his house for several months, Shoutarou Kominami by chance lands a part-time job in an attempt to break free of his less than human existence and "shlocken" personality. But unbeknownst to the former shut-in, his new boss is a manga artist, and Shoutarou is about to become his muse?!
