Action

Who doesn’t like action and adventure!? My Hero Academia is set in U.A. High School. This isn’t any ordinary high school; this high school trains the next generation of superheroes. These superheroes are often defined by their “quirks” (i.e. powers). Protagonist Izuku Midoriya, having no quirk but wanting to become a hero, is constantly bullied. However, after trying to protect his tormentor from a supervillain, the greatest hero of them all, All Might, gives Midoriya his personal quirk. This is only the beginning for Midoriya as he must confront the evil League of Villains and stop them from taking over society as we know it! For the people in your life who just can’t seem to sit still, you can’t go wrong with My Hero Academia!

Comedy

The holidays are a festive time, so laugh out loud with something silly! We’re choosing The Devil is a Part-Timer as our comedy pick this year! Perhaps the most absurd concept of any title on this list, The Devil is a Part-Timer sees the demon lord Satan chased into modern-day Tokyo. He quickly discovers that he has lost his magical abilities, and in order to survive, takes on a human form and gets a job working at fast food chain MgRonald’s! To add insult to injury, the hero who forced him out of his original realm has followed him into the contemporary world! The characters must adapt and face everyday dilemmas of living and working as hourly workers with comedic results, and their personalities and true moral values are slowly revealed. Part-Timer’s well-developed setting and comedy based on insightful societal observations will surely put a smile on anyone’s face!

Drama

Do you know anyone who loves the emotional highs and lows of a good drama? Check out A Silent Voice, a movie detailing the saga of a boy named Shoya, who bullied a deaf classmate named Shoko when they were in elementary school. After she transfers schools, he becomes bullied himself. As he grows older, the consequences of his actions towards Shoko and his guilt lead him to search for the girl he once bullied in a quest for redemption. A Silent Voice is a powerful animated film that discusses the serious and always timely topics of bullying, anxiety, suicide, and friendship in a way that has yet to be rivaled.

Fantasy

We all have friends and family who would prefer to be saving a kingdom at the end of the year. For those that enjoy busting out shields, swords, and spell books, you can’t do much better than Sword Art Online! In 2022, a virtual reality fantasy game called Sword Art Online is released, one that allows players to feel, smell, and hear the world around them. Unfortunately, something is amiss, and players are unable to log out, or they will die in the real world! They are informed that the only way to be free to conquer all 100 floors of the Aincrad, a steel castle in SAO. The first season follows players Kirito and Asuna as they embark on a quest to free the gamers from what has become a very real and deadly situation!

Horror

Got a loved one who wishes Halloween was a 365-days-a-year holiday? Perfect Blue is the, pardon the pun, perfect anime for you! Although elements of physical, slasher films are present, Perfect Blue is first and foremost a psychological thriller. Pop idol Mima Kirigoe decides to leave her popular musical group to pursue a career in acting, and this is when her life starts to seemingly fall apart. A disgruntled superfan, upset with her change in image and persona, begins stalking Mimi, and a website begins publishing diary entries that claim to be written by Mimi, although she has no recollection of being the author! As the plot unfolds, Mimi begins to question her sanity and reality itself. If your scare-loving friends and family love tales involving psychologically deranged characters, make sure to put a copy of Perfect Blue in their stocking this year!

Mystery

Who done it? Right Stuf’s done it! End your search for the puzzle-solving detective on your list for Danganronpa: The Animation is here! Hope's Peak Academy is a high school for gifted students, and Makoto has been admitted into the school. Unfortunately, he loses consciousness upon entering the school grounds. When he wakes up, the school’s headmaster, a robotic bear named Monokuma, reveals to the students that they are trapped and can only leave once they have killed off the other students! But there’s another caveat: they can’t get caught! As the students try and escape the school, they soon discover more clues about the school and their remote-controlled taskmaster…

Romance

Not everyone is looking for death and destruction this time of year! Kimi Ni Todoke is our heartwarming romance pick this year! This shojo love story explores the love life of Sawako, a high school student who is cruelly referred to as Sadako by her classmates due to her shy demeanor and an appearance similar to the aforementioned villainess from The Ring. Her life begins to change for the better when popular boy Kazehaya, who has troubles of his own, begins speaking with her. Sawako begins to make new friends and come out of her social isolation as a romance begins to bloom. Give this sweet yet meaningful viewing experience as a beautiful end of the year present!

Science Fiction

Mecha! Spaceships! Lasers! For those that look to the stars! Get them something they’ll love and appreciate in Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War In the Pocket! Receiving wide acclaim from fans and critics alike, War in the Pocket is a side story set during the original Gundam TV show. Unlike the traditional Gundam lineup, action and space battles are not the focus, and in its place is a message about the realities and horrors of war, told through the eyes of a young boy. Any fan of hard sci-fi will almost certainly appreciate the mature, poignant storyline told in 0080.

Family

The holidays are a time to spend time with each other, so get something the whole family can enjoy! My Neighbor Totoro is just that. Directed by acclaimed anime director Hayao Miyazaki, Totoro follows Satsuki and her younger sister Mei through their incredible journey with their neighbor, a forest spirit named Totoro! The Studio Ghibli classic hasn’t aged a bit since it was first released in 1988: fantastic imagery, imaginative characters, and gorgeous animation are rarely so tightly woven together. Treat your family – and yourself – this winter with My Neighbor Totoro!

Sports

People tend to get passionate about sports. REAL passionate. Haikyu!! is the perfect title for the hard-working athlete or not-so-hard-working armchair jock. Shoyo Hinata, an athletic but short junior high school student, joins the volleyball team after being inspired by a game on national TV. Unfortunately, his team is crushed by the championship favorite opposition, which includes brilliant volleyball tactician Tobio Kageyama. Before Hinata can seek revenge, the two find themselves on the same team! The volleyball-themed manga and anime is a relatively recent hit, and with the third season just now hitting Blu-ray, now is a great time to get into the series!

Games

Is there a better time to sit back, relax, and enjoy a good gaming session? We think not! For the gamers in your life, pick up Tanto Cuore, a deck-building game based around a world-beating team of maids. While the concept may seem a tad off kilter, Tanto Cuore is an easy-to-pick-up, non-elimination game for 2-4 players. With a plethora of card types and expansions, the game always provides enough variety so that it never feels old, but at the same time, it never feels too complex. The low barrier of entry and focus on multiple players makes this an excellent way to spend some well-deserved time off for your family and friends!
