Welcome to the world of Pokémon! I am a huge Pokémon fan so when I got the chance to review Pokémon I Choose You! by Ryo Takamisaki, I had to jump on it. The manga starts off very similar to the first episode of the anime; Ash wakes up late on his tenth birthday and needs to rush over to Professor Oak’s lab to claim his first Pokémon. There is only one problem. When Ash gets there, all the Pokémon have been claimed! So Oak gives him a very stubborn Pikachu. As they start their adventure, they are attacked and Ash jumps into action, protecting Pikachu. Their journey continues much like the first season of the anime.
The first major change I would say is whom Ash travels with. He meets a female trainer named Verity and a male trainer named Sorrel. They seem to be replacements for Misty and Brock. Along with this change, there’s a wider variety of Pokémon. Instead of all being from Generation One, there are a few Pokémon from Generation Four all the way to Generation Seven. It is a nice touch to combine the older Generation One storyline with a newer Generation Seven perspective. The whole story revolves around Ash trying to find Ho-Oh but facing all sorts of struggles: from a trainer who abandoned his Charmander all the way up to an epic battle with the legendary Pokémon Marshadow.
I cannot recommend this manga enough. This book is for everyone, from people who watched the original season on TV and remember the Butterfree arc (Yes, that is in this book), to anyone who is new to the series and knows very little about Pokémon. As of writing this, I have not seen the corresponding movie, but if it is as good as this manga was, I can’t wait to see it. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up.
When Ash Ketchum oversleeps on his 10th birthday, he ends up with a stubborn Pikachu instead of the first partner Pokémon he wanted! But after a rocky start, Ash and Pikachu become close friends and true partners—and when they catch a rare glimpse of the Legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh in flight, they make plans to seek it out together. Trainers Verity and Sorrel join Ash on his journey, and along the way, they meet the mysterious Mythical Pokémon Marshadow. When they near their goal, an arrogant Trainer named Cross stands in their way. Can Ash and Pikachu defeat him and reach Ho-Oh as they promised, or will their journey end here?Add to CartLearn More
