Our Favorite Romantic Ships

-Written by: Krystal

For the most part, the coupling we see in anime are relatively satisfying. The main character ends up with the person we were rooting for and they live happily ever after. Sometimes, however, we are left angry because the couple never pans out or the main character ends up with the wrong person (at least we think they do) and we’re left with nothing but our failed ships. We gathered a list of our top ten favorite ships that we really wish would have happened. Read it now and see if you agree!

Victor and Yuri - Yuri!! On Ice

I know Victor and Yuri are together. You know Victor and Yuri are together. The only thing stopping this ship from being a reality is the show not actually coming out (yes, the pun was intentional) and saying Victor and Yuri are together. The chemistry between these two is undeniable and as the viewer, you can tell from the looks that they give each other that they are in love. At the end of episode 10, the couple exchanges gold rings that a lot of viewers took as them getting engaged. I don’t know about you, but I don’t typically exchange rings with my besties.

Legosi and Louis - Beastars

The heat shared between these two is so hot that you will need a fan in the middle of winter to cool down. From the very first scene that Louis and Legoshi share, the tension is HIGH. The scene where Louis puts his hand in Legosi’s mouth and asks him to bite him feels way more sexual than it should have been. The pure reactions that these two cause in each other creates some of the best confrontational scenes in the show. Truth be told, in a lot of ways these two have better chemistry together than either of them do with Haru, the actual love interest.

Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki - Bleach

Ichigo and Rukia prove time and again that they make a fantastic team. They obviously care for each other deeply and are always ready to save the other. Their chemistry is off the charts and they complement one another, both in skill and personality, so well that it’s so surprising they never ended up together. Rukia broke the Soul Reaper law and gave Ichigo her powers and trained him, which eventually put her on death row that Ichigo ended up saving her from. That type of love and devotion isn’t seen every day.

Satoru Fujinuma and Kayo Hinazuki - Erased

When Satoru goes back in time to save the children who were murdered by the same man who killed his mother, he befriends the killer’s first victim, Kayo, in order to figure out how to save her. They quickly create a strong bond and a genuine friendship. Satoru’s mind is that of a 29-year-old, so he’s able to understand what is really happening in Kayo’s family life and the urgency to protect her from both her mother and her impending murder. You’d think that the bond that was created between the two would bring them together when they become adults, but no. Kayo gets married and has a baby with Hiromi, another murdered child from Satoru’s original timeline. While it was great that Kayo was able to live a happy adult life, it was still disappointing the two never got together.

Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Roy and Riza have a long and intense past. They have known each other for years and are always together. Roy was Riza’s father’s apprentice and he convinced her to join the ranks. The two have one of the most cooperative and close relationships on the show and people have wondered for years whether the two are together. They make an excellent team, but would make an even better couple. When Roy calls Riza “my Queen,” your heart will skip a beat. The two obviously care deeply for one another, as shown when Lust tells Riza that she basically killed Roy and when Riza lay dying in front of Roy. In both instances the two get angry and lose control of their own wits from being so worried about the other, indicating there may be something else going on besides friendship. The author of the manga has even hinted that the two are together. The devotion they show toward one another is beautiful.

Erza Scarlet and Jellal - Fairy Tail

Erza and Jellal are soulmates. It’s painfully obvious whenever they are together. The two love each other but refuse to admit it. They are probably one of the most frustrating couples on this list because they have basically admitted their love for one another but haven’t acted on it. One of the things that is standing in their way is Jellal’s insistence on torturing himself after what he did while possessed by Ultear’s magic. It’s obvious that Erza is just waiting for him to realize he is allowed to love and doesn’t have to put so much distance between them. By the end of the series Jellal does say he can love freely, so hopefully that means they finally got together in the end.

Ymir and Historia - Attack on Titan

The end of these two’s love story was both sad and frustrating. Ymir did so much to keep Historia safe and to help her grow as a person and be her true self. It was incredibly emotional when Ymir died before the two could make it official and show everyone their love. While the show doesn’t show any actual romantic scenes between the two, it is heavily implied and quite obvious to the viewers. Ymir helped Historia become stronger and the person she was meant to be and Historia helped make Ymir a better person.

Spike and Faye - Cowboy Bebop

This couple is more wishful thinking than anything else. Spike is basically unable to love anyone until he moves on from Julia, which doesn’t happen until the end of the series, but that doesn’t keep us from wishing he would have had a romantic relationship with Faye. Spike was always trying to help Faye move on from her past and live in the present, while Faye tried to do the same for him. The two’s bickering feels more like an old married couple than that of just friends. The two cared for each other to the point of considering the other family. Faye’s reaction when Spike goes to the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate (basically with no chance of surviving) felt like she felt more for him than just a friend. We would have loved to have seen what would have happened with their relationship if Spike had survived.

Sasuke and Naruto - Naruto

Sasuke and Naruto’s relationship has gone all the way back to their childhoods. The two were each other’s first friends, they were each other’s first kiss (granted, it was an accident) and the show is basically centered around their relationship. They honestly have more chemistry with each other than they do with their respective wives. Anyone who watches the show can see the deep bond the two have, which makes one wonder, wouldn’t they be better as a couple? In Japan there is even a 50 Shades of Grey audio drama about the two with the original Japanese voice actors.

Ash and Misty - Pokemon

Ash and Misty are probably one of the OG ships we have on this list. They have one of the cutest meet-cutes that would do any rom-com justice. The two eventually become best friends, setting up a great boy-girl-next-door story. The two perfectly embody the awkwardness of junior high crushes and “dating” that we all went through. We know that Misty has a crush on Ash, and if Ash wasn’t a forever 10 year-old they might actually have a chance at a happily ever after. Hopefully one day (one day!) Ash will figure out there is more to life than “catching them all!”
