Who is your favorite monster? Are you looking for something scary and mysterious or do you prefer friendly and adorable? Mythical creatures are a defining feature of many unique anime and manga. You can find the ever popular vampires and the lesser known Dullahan. Whatever you prefer, anime has something for everyone.

Centaurs

Centaurs are creatures whose lower body is that of a horse and their upper body is human. A Centaur’s Life features Himemo Kimihara a high schooler in a world where everyone has a bit of the supernatural in them. Kind Himeno also sports horse ears amid her curly red hair.

Demons

Demons are associated with the evil of hell. The first anime demon that may come to mind is simply one hell of a butler. Sebastian Michaelis from Black Butler has formed a contract with young Ciel Phantomhive in exchange for his soul. However, until Sebastian has completed Ciel’s original wish, he must obey him. Sebastian is portrayed as being unstoppable and can make completing an impossible task look effortless. He has red eyes and black fingernails to help his everyday appearance be more demonic. In addition, his demonic form has sharp claws, slit pupils, sharper teeth, and dark wings. The Devil is a Part-Timer also has a few demonic characters. Satan rules his kingdom with power to spare when suddenly the Hero wins the fight and Satan runs away to modern-day Tokyo. He loses his power but when he accumulates some he changes from an ordinary human into his demon form. This form is huge, muscular, and includes horns, hooved legs, wings, and claws.

Dragons

Dragons are a mythical creature that can come in many forms, with the main two traditional options being eastern and western dragons. Of course anime has even more ideas to include dragons in making a fantastic story. In Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, dragons can transform at will. Our main dragon, Tohru, is a giant green western dragon. However, since she chooses to live among humans, she takes the form of a human girl wearing a maid outfit. She also prefers to keep her tail and horns while in her human form. In The Dragon Dentist you can enjoy a more fierce and animalistic kind of dragon. This dragon has qualities that are more often associated with eastern dragons, as they are considered the guardian of the country.

Fairies

Fairies have taken many different forms throughout time as their fame has grown. They can take on various sizes, have wings or not, use magic, and can hide in the fae realm where humans cannot easily reach. Fairies are also strongly associated with nature. The Ancient Magus’ Bride has fairies which are a size similar to humans. They often try to entice Chise Hatori astray and into the fae realm. Within this realm time moves differently. Chise visits for only a day or so but when she returns home an entire season has passed. The comedy Humanity Has Declined features mischievous fairies as well. These tiny creatures cause trouble in their pursuit of candy with their complete disregard for human safety.

Succubi

Succubi can seduce those around them without even trying, as well as feed off of a human’s life force. Rosario + Vampire has a succubus named Kurumu Korono who tries to seduce the male student body and make them her slaves. In her true form she has a pair of bat wings, tail, and razor-sharp nails. You can also meet a succubus in The Testament of Sister New Devil. High school student Basara Tojo suddenly has two gorgeous step-sisters when his father remarries! Step-sister Maria Naruse is a succubus. Maria’s abilities include creating master servant pacts, partially distorting memories, and making people succumb to lust. Witches

Witches are most often females with the ability to perform magic. This knowledge is passed down through the generations as a witch is usually born with this skill. These magic users have historically been associated with demons but most recently they have been portrayed as perfectly friendly and are easily accepted into society. The main character of Flying Witch, Makoto Kowata, is sent to live with relatives at the age of 15. This follows tradition among witches that at age 15 you are an adult and should be independent. She can fly on a broom, perform magic, and interacts with other magical creatures like mandrakes and ghosts. Her familiar is a black cat named Chito. These traits are very similar to those shown by Kiki in Kiki’s Delivery Service, who goes out to live on her own at the age of 13 with her broomstick and her black cat Jiji.
