At some point or another, everyone has a bad night where they're unable to sleep, and the lack of proper rest makes it difficult to function in the morning- but for some unfortunate people who deal with insomnia, lack of sleep night after night makes every day of life quite difficult. In Insomniacs After School by Makoto Ojiro one of these people, Ganta Nakami, is viewed by his classmates as irritable and mean looking, as his insomnia eats away at him. But one day while searching for boxes in the school's rumored-to-be-haunted observatory he stumbles upon another student, Isaki Magari, snoozing, and finds a kindred spirit dealing with the same problem. Isaki's struggle with insomnia led her to start the rumors of ghosts haunting the room to keep others from finding out about her condition, but her new bond with Nakami leads them to making it their secret base for stealing some Zs and starting the Enjoy-the-Night club after school.

The character designs give the art a grounded feel, while the backgrounds swing between being detailed to being a negative space that focuses on the characters. Nakami and Isaki's nighttime adventure for the Enjoy-the-Night club is beautifully rendered, and calls back to teenage dreams of being able to wander through town with a friend, dodging adults still patrolling, and getting to see familiar places with a feeling of wonder as the world sleeps. Several chapters in volume one also have a few pages without dialogue, focusing on the environments around the characters, which adds to the atmosphere.

Insomniacs After School is a charming slice of life story, with grouchy Nakami and the more upbeat Isaki feeling real to life, and their developing friendship makes for a calming read. For anyone enjoying the current anime adaptation, or anyone who enjoys grounded stories with laid-back vibes, it's well worth the time.

Insomniacs After School Manga Volume 1

Insomniacs After School volume 1 features story and art by Makoto Ojiro.

Two sleepless teenagers find kinship as they escape to their school's astronomy observatory.

Unable to sleep at night, Ganta Nakami is cranky in class and unpopular with his classmates. He discovers that the school observatory, once used by the now-defunct astronomy club, may be the perfect place for a nap - but he's not alone. Fellow insomniac Isaki Magari is willing to share the observatory with Nakami, and a friendship between the two begins as they bond over the most unlikely of things.

Dark rumors about what befell the members of the astronomy club keep people away from the school observatory, and that's what makes it the perfect sanctuary for Nakami and Magari to get some much-needed rest. Unfortunately, the school faculty can't allow its unsanctioned use. But if there were a new astronomy club, maybe these two insomniacs could have a place to call home!
