Yasushi Baba’s satirical look at the state of politics right now takes place in an alternate universe were political tensions are high and there seems to be an inevitable WWIII approaching. The world super powers are America lead by President Billary Quintone and Russia lead by their President for life Vladislav Putinov. Just when you think you know what’s going on there is a flashback to Rasputin’s fake assassination attempt which is somehow the cause of the turmoil in the present.
The previously mentioned characters are not the main characters. The story follow Sasha Goundarenko who is known as “the White Witch” and her partner Ryuzo Hijikata “The Grim Reaper”. Both are genetically enhanced by Peacemakers. These protective bracelets teleport bullets, blades, and any objects that damage the human body to another dimension. Mostly worn by martial artist and assassins the peacemaker bracelets turn regular soldiers into Czernborgs roided-out killers. This technology is said to be developed by the Russian government but America has Czernborgs as well. Ryuzo and Sasha do not work for America or Russia but is seems that they have a mission of higher importance given to them by Rasputin who is somehow still alive and young!
I judged this book by it’s cover and I was sold when I saw a tiger getting it’s head karate chopped off! But if that doesn’t sell you then maybe you will like the political commentary and world history that is referenced in this martial-arts-free-for-all. Still not sold?
