Chances are, if you’re a kid of the 90s, you know exactly what makes Cardcaptor Sakura one of the most wonderful, whimsical magical girl stories ever created. CCS is a mix of something so nostalgic and cozy, yet no matter how many times I experience this story and its characters, I never get tired of it.
If you’re not familiar with the franchise, Cardcaptor Sakura (or Cardcaptors, as it was localized in the US) is written by the all-powerful, all-female mangaka collective, CLAMP. The story follows a fourth grader named Sakura Kinomoto, who accidentally releases a number of powerful Clow Cards into the world after finding a mysterious book in her father’s library. Like most magical girl series, she then forms a contract with the lovable guardian of the book, Kero-chan, in an attempt to find, win over, and collect all the cards.
I think what makes Sakura stand out amongst other heroines of her genre is her ability to think quickly under pressure and her “magical” ability to turn every situation into a positive one. I think this makes her a wonderful protagonist to root for and really adds to the wholesome charm of the series.
Volume 1 is pretty basic as far as the story goes. We are introduced to Sakura’s family, her crush, and her best friend, Tomoyo. We are also introduced to the first handful of Clow Cards and, just like Sakura, you start to get a feel for what it means to be a Cardcaptor. The only negative from me, is that my very favorite character doesn’t make an appearance until the last page. Other than that, I think this is a very solid beginning volume of an extremely classic, genre-influencing series.
Cardcaptor Sakura is my most beloved media franchise of all time. Over the years I have collected every bit of merchandise I can get my hands on - so believe me when I say that this Hardcover Collector’s Edition is the best way I have ever experienced the manga. It truly is the definitive way to own the series in print form. The cover art alone had me slack-jawed, and the size of the pages let you really see every bit of gorgeous detail that CLAMP put into the art. Each copy even includes a collectible mini Clow Card, which I was delighted to find.
If you love this series as much as I do, this buy is a no brainer, but I do think that this is also a perfect way to experience the magic of Cardcaptor Sakura for the very first time.
Cardcaptor Sakura is one of the all-time classics of the magical girl genre, and the Collector’s Edition will be the definitive version of the story, for both long-time fans and readers new to the story. The adventures of the plucky Sakura Kinomoto are as adorably thrilling as ever, as she tracks down the magical Clow Cards and plunges headlong into a world of sorcery beyond anything she could’ve imagined.Add to CartLearn More
