Nyankees Manga Volume 1 Review

“Astray, in a new city, surrounded by unfamiliar scents, sights, and sounds, but dead set on furry vengeance!”

Jocelyn's Review

I can’t keep my paws off this book! Nyankees Manga Volume 1 is definitely at the top of the books I’ve read so far this year.

Character development was the main focus for this first volume as the overall story didn’t proceed past the “revenge” aspect. Transitions between the human and cat scenes are hilarious and had me laughing out loud almost every other page. I also enjoyed all of the cat references and puns this book included. The art is simple, fun, yet smooth between panels, making it a quick read that leaves you wanting more. This manga has me hooked like a cat on catnip. It’ll be a long wait until April when Volume 2 releases, but I’m interested to see where this story leads! If you enjoy other titles like Hitorijime My Hero, Banana Fish, or if you just want to enjoy a comedic manga I would suggest this series to you!

Will's Re-mew

A purrfect send-up on the teenage delinquent stories of the 70s & 80s, which are called yankii. Wait - yankii… nYANKEE… hmmm.

People who have watched Cromartie High School will feel at home with the subject material about gangsters who are anatomically-correct cats. This volume shows the rise of the main character, Ryuusei, from stray to Top Cat. The characters don’t grow out of being archetypes, but they act as great vehicles for the cat-related jokes (one about boxes is especially creative and funny). But really it’s about family, or the Fast and Furious definition of family at least. Getting to see the softer side of these critters makes them endearing and makes the comedy much more hilarious. I hope in the next volume they lean more into showing the fights in cat-form; there’s some untapped potential of a tabby roundhouse-kicking a Persian.
