Not Your Idol was quite an interesting and mind-boggling manga to read. It combined both the elements of a cute shoujo manga and a psychological thriller manga to make this crazy concoction! This manga will definitely give you plenty of reasons why life in the spotlight isn’t as glorious and amazing as it sounds.
The plot is about Nina Kamiyama, a girl who was once a popular idol in the group Pure Club, until one fateful day when she was assaulted by a fan at a meet and greet. That day changed her life, and the traumatic experience made her no longer want to be seen as a defenseless feminine girl. At school, she keeps to herself and hides her true identity, but one of her classmates, Hikaru Horiuchi, knows who she really is. The two of them become close, and Hikaru vows to protect Nina because the crazy fan who harmed her is still on the loose...
Overall I loved everything about this manga: the characters, the plot, and the art were all really well done. The only thing I disliked was the really big plot twist at the end of the manga because I have to wait to get all of my questions answered! But I recommend this manga as it reminded me a lot of one of my favorite movies, Perfect Blue (a classic animated film from the late 1990’s about a girl who quit her idol life to become an actress in a very dangerous acting world) so if you’re a fan of that movie or any dramatic, almost scary manga then I suggest giving Not Your Idol a try!
