Can you believe it’s been over 20 years since Fruits Basket ended? In honor of the anniversary, the author, Natsuki Takaya, created an ‘after-story’ to the original series. With the curse long broken and the characters now adults, what’s the hook? Why, we see what’s going on with their kids!
In present day, shy girl Sawa Mitoma is transferred to a new high school. Little does she know that it’s the same school attended by the Sohma’s! Not only that, but they’re all super cute! She gets recruited by Yuki’s son, Mutsuki, to join the student council. What happens next is your typical high school hijinks, but being an ‘after story’ gives the plot more weight.
This story, in a way, is the the fruits of Tohru Honda’s labor. The Sohmas are kind and gentle, with no tough problems. This is contrasted by Mitoma-san, who is a bundle of self-confidence issues. Fruits Basket was about a girl using kindness to help a family; In Fruits Basket Another, the Sohmas pay that kindness forward to Mitoma.
Reading this reminded me of why I fell in love with the series over a decade ago: The dimensional characters that grow on you as you read. This hits home in the bonus manga at the end. I won’t spoil it, but it shows the reason Takaya decided to come back to this series one last time.
Sawa Mitoma, a shy and unconfident girl, has just started high school, and it's already not going well...until she makes friends meets the President and Vice-President of the student council. But little does she know, they're Sohmas!? It's Fruits Basket...again!Add to CartLearn More
