Fans (and Haters) of Sailor Moon: Puella Magi Madoka Magica

That’s right, Aniplex anime is on sale this holiday! Now is the best time to pick up one of the most influential anime of the past decade. Madoka is a kind girl who discovers a cute magical cat named Kyubey, who introduces her to the world of magical girls and witches. Great power and friendship can be hers... if she signs Kyubey’s contract. While using the common themes of Magical Girl anime, it explores them in new and mature ways. Don’t let the cute characters fool you, this series gets pretty dark. Now at its low(er) price, it’s time to experience it for the first time or all over again.

Isekai Fanatics: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious

If you haven’t heard about the isekai craze, Isekai is a genre where the main character is transported or reincarnated into another world, usually a fantasy world with video game mechanics. While super popular, they're often criticized for being formulaic power fantasies. But The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious flips the genre tropes on their heads. The title gives away the plot but here it is anyway: Seiya has just died and is summoned into another world by the goddess Rista. She sees how his stats are crazy powerful and jumps at the chance of having her help defeat the demon king. There’s just one problem: Seiya is overly cautious! This comedy pokes fun at many of the tropes for isekai, leading to lots of laughs, including Rista’s narration as she struggles to convince Seiya that all the preparation is pointless. It's a fun read that will keep you laughing throughout.

Gundam Fans: Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin

The original Mobile Suit Gundam anime is a landmark series and cultural touchstone. Still, some people don’t want to watch an “old anime,” not even the condensed and still great movie trilogy. Now with The Origin manga series, no one has an excuse. This retelling of the original series is excellent, giving the Mobile Suits an updated look and injecting atmosphere in the art. The series goes even deeper into questions left unanswered in the original series, such as the rise of Char Aznable and the Principality of Zeon. It’s a remake done right, and for some people the definitive telling of the story that captured the hearts of Japan.

Superhero Fans: One-Punch Man

One of the funniest anime comedies, One-Punch Man is a loving parody of superheroes and action anime. Saitama is the most powerful person in the world, able to beat supervillains in… wait for it… One Punch! So why does his life feel so unrewarding? Why, when he’s in battle with the world’s future in the balance, does he think about how he’s missing a great sale at the grocery store? And why oh why can’t he kill that mosquito buzzing around his ear? It’s moments like these that make the show so funny, because even when a man has everything, they still share the same struggles as the rest of us. The animation is also top tier, featuring work from some of the premier animators in the anime industry. If you crave that superhero action but with tongue in cheek, One-Punch Man is the anime for you!

Gag Gift: Pop Team Epic

This surreal Robot Chicken for otakus will leave everyone confused and laughing their butts off at the same time. Starring the duo of Popuko (The Short One) and Pipimi (The Tall One), the comedy sketches range from the bizarre to the experimental. You could go from an Elder Srolls: Skyrim joke to Popuko sliding down a piano keyboard. They don’t even stay in the same medium; some sketches are in stop-motion or CGI. Despite the anarchy, the animation is surprisingly top-notch. The opening song is a total banger too. A great way to laugh with or at friends watching.
