The Fantasy Shoujo You've Been Waiting For

by

Yona of the Dawn immediately captured my heart and has become my favorite manga of all time. We begin our story with Princess Yona, your typical spoiled princess.. but we get to watch her become SO much more over the course of the story. The character development for not only Yona but the others that join her makes for an enriching story full of complex and very human characters. We see them at their highs and their lows - both the protagonists and antagonists. Mix this in with a fantasy and historical setting and you've got a real winner. While this is a shoujo it is not held back by that label - the focus is not entirely on the romance aspect and it takes advantage of its amazing setting to immerse you in the plot and different arcs. The time period opens it up to political drama, action (yes, sweet sweet fighting and battle scenes!), and other various troubles a nation faces such as poverty and disease. (Don't worry, if you're looking for hot guys too there are still some here).

Yona of the Dawn

by -

A solid first volume to a great fantasy series. I was so happy when VIZ Media announced the acquisition of Yona of the Dawn as it is one of the titles I wanted to get licensed.

My first exposure to this series was through the anime and I loved it so much that I wanted to read the manga. I didn't really expect to like it all this much given that I didn't like the mangaka's previous works but I'm glad I was wrong.

This is the story of Yona, a spoiled and sheltered princess who lived all her life in Hiryu palace. She knew nothing of the outside world. One fateful evening, she witnessed the murder of her father and was no longer the same since then. Her life has changed completely as she lost her place in the palace but with the help of her faithful guard Hak, she continues to survive.

The series has a great cast of well-developed characters. Can't wait to see more characters introduced in the upcoming volumes.

FREAKING AWESOME!

by -

This Manga is FREAKING AWESOME! The beginning looked so lame at first so I thought it was going to be one of those "Oh, dear! Someone Help me because I can't do anything on my own!" kind of Mangas but NOOOOOOOO I was so wrong. The more you get into it the better and better it gets. I pulled all nighters just to try and finish it online. Ah, Love this Manga. Favorite chapter is chapter 100. Long live the Yellow Dragon. Pun intended.

I have been waiting for the right moment to start this series and now I have. I don't know what I love more about this series, the characters, the story, or the art. It's got it all. Definitely give this series a chance if you are looking for a new Shojo series with a couple of twists and turns along with amazing attention to detail when it comes to the art and setting of this series.

A Princess who learns to pull her own weight!

by

I love this story and the 1st vol pulls you in! Its about a princess who loses everything, her title, her home, and her father! All in the first vol ! I recommend this for people who want to read a shoujo where the girl is not super dense.

Probably the Best Fantasy Shoujo I've Read

by

There is so much depth to this story. I adore it so much! The main character was a spoiled and centered princess, but her overall development throughout the story is beautifully done. For some it may seem slow, but it works with the pace of the story. There's a reason for every plot twist and turn she faces. The story never gets boring. I love it all. I appreciate that the romance isn't the main focus at all, but it's also not left out. I love learning about Kouka Kingdom and the lands around. Such a well thought-out story. It's unlike shounen stories which have some dull arcs as fillers, I find this series has little fillers and everything has a meaning. Definitely worth your time!

Favorite Shojo Series

by -

The Yona series holds a special place in my heart. I love the cast and I think the plot is wonderfully full of political intrigue. The mangaka doesn't shy away from writing hard realities when necessary. It fills that very specific niche of having a romance series that also balances a compelling plot.
Owning this manga is a treat because it looks great on my bookshelves and I can reread it as many times as I want. I highly recommend it!
