Welcome to the Novel that started it all

An important prerequisite to reading the manga and watching the anime, Tatsuhiko Takimoto's light novel Welcome to the NHK is a definite worth read. Take the opportunity to relive the story with minor differences and even challenge yourself to see the characters differently from the anime and manga. If you've neither seen the anime nor read the manga, I still recommend reading this tremendous light novel, full of dark comedy. As I' searched far and wide, the best deal for this product was here at Right Stuf Anime.

Welcome to Reality

Welcome to the NHK is in my top 5 gem list. Its a story that cannot be matched if you are interested in a very weird, yet brilliant mix of comedy and depression. Dark, perverted, psycho, hilarious, and a wake-up call for many who come across this novel. Follow a 22-year old shut-in who has given up all hope at fitting in with society, his struggle against what he believes to be a conspiracy group called the N.H.K., and his attempt to slowly regain his humanity thanks to a mysterious girl he met through fate. I highly recommend the manga as well as the anime, as all three are absolute gold.

You gotta read this!!

Welcome to the NHK is the best thing. You will not regret it. Read the novel and watch the animu and if you feel hot and spicy you can also read the manga.

The Welcome to the NHK novel is really a must have. This will definitely be worth both your time and money. The about section pretty much tells it all. This story has both been adapted to a manga and an anime which are just as fantastic as this novel. Those are just as worth checking out as this novel.

Fans of the anime will love it.

If you like the anime you should like the novel too. Personally, I think the story is really about Satou's mental illness and Misaki's effect on him (and not so much about all the stuff mentioned in the blurb). The big differences between the novel and anime are the novel's lack of long, drawn-out side stories like the MMORPG and the pyramid scheme . Also, Satou bails on the gal game early in the novel, and his sempai only plays a minor role.

The novel does have Satou using hallucinogens, and this seems to be what makes the appliances talk (not paranoid conspiracy thinking).

Surprisingly different from the anime

Welcome to the NHK is one of my favorite animes. Its mix of hilarious dark comedy and extremely depressing moments is something I haven't seen done as well except for in Bojack Horseman. So naturally I was excited to check out the source material.
One thing that you'll soon notice is that the novel deviates quite a bit from the anime adaptation. I personally found the novel a lot darker as it goes deeper into the themes of substance abuse and self-harm. Also, without spoiling anything, many of the key moments play out very differently and the especially characters of Misaki and Yamazaki are portrayed differently. Because of this, I think fans of the anime will enjoy the book as it offers a very different experience instead of just re-telling the same story beat by beat. I still prefer the storytelling in the anime, but I'm glad I read the source material.
