Weathering With You contains the animated film directed by Makoto Shinkai.

From Makoto Shinkai, the director of the global smash hit Your Name., comes a critically-acclaimed new romantic drama set in the rain-soaked streets (and skies) of modern Tokyo. The summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits.

The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hodaka meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong-willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky…

Is There Still Anything that Love Can Do?

by

I really liked this film. I know some people complain that it isn't as good as Your Name, but that is what happens when something is so damn popular, it makes the next project hard to beat. I love both and am not going to compare this to Your Name because it is it's own thing, even though there is a cameo.

First off the music for is fantastic, it was used in the right spots and made me tear up quiet a few times. The animation was amazing as well, all that water made it beautiful. Now to the plot, it has that subtle romance over the course of the film until it peaks. It's what people call a slow burn. There is also some drama near the end of the film, the film takes you on a rainbow of emotions and I was pleasantly surprised with the ending.

Don't be a snob and not watch this amazing film because people are telling you it's not as good as Your Name, it's worth your time.

Starts off great, disappointing after that.

Makoto Shinkai's follow-up to YOUR NAME is a tough act to follow, although the concept it attempts to portray isn't half bad. The first half of the picture is actually the best, in which our protagonists get to know each other and start off a business which involves a lot of humor and heart. Unfortunately, it goes downhill in the second half, building to a loud and obnoxious climax overburdened with distracting rock music, and an ending that might infuriate people protesting for actions against climate change. In all fairness, this is intentional on Shinkai's part, but I found the film's resolution so off-putting that it brought WEATHERING WITH YOU down by several notches. The animation is gorgeous as usual, and the characters are, for the most part, charming, but the structure of the story is a serious detriment. If the picture stayed on the same level as its delightful opening, I would gladly recommend it without hesitation, but I cannot. That said, NYAV Post's dub is fantastic.

A decent fun adventure

I got into Makoto Shinkai from his work on Your Name and absolutely love all of his work. This is no different, Weathering With You is an emotional fun ride. It isn't AS emotional as Your Name though. All of the animation is very beautiful. I'd give it a 9/10, but because of the 5 star rating system it's closer to a 4 star instead of a 5 star.

Headline: Good Movie, Just Avoid The English Dub

by -

I probably still like "Your Name" better, but overall I thought "Weathering With You" was a good movie. I especially liked the music in this film that was once again scored by Radwimps. Blu-ray extras had several making-of documentaries which was nice.

However I have to say that the English dub was terrible. I don't think I have ever cringed so hard in just the first 30 seconds of a film before, and by the one minute mark I was fighting to keep myself from grabbing the remote and changing the audio to Japanese. I think the dub overall become more bearable as the film went on, but the overall performances were not that great although it was not completely unexpected considering that they brought in Hollywood celebrities to voice the main characters instead of actual voice actors. The actor who voiced Hodaka in particular was the worse of the bunch (see the cringe comment above) while the rest of the cast varied in performance.
