About Vinland Saga Manga Volume 1 (Hardcover)

Vinland Saga volume 1 features story and art by Makoto Yukimura in this hardcover edition.

As a child, Thorfinn sat at the feet of the great Leif Ericson and thrilled to wild tales of a land far to the west, but his youthful fantasies were shattered by a mercenary raid. Raised by the Vikings who murdered his family, Thorfinn became a terrifying warrior, forever seeking to kill the band's leader, Askeladd, and avenge his father.

Sustaining Thorfinn through his ordeal are his pride in his family and his dreams of a fertile westward land, a land without war or slavery... the land Leif called Vinland.

VIKINGS!

by -

If you like vikings then I don't know why you haven't bought this yet.
If you are in the middle about vikings keep reading >:D
This is probably one of the deepest story's I've read. The characters seem extremely realistic and the events that happen are awesome. It is a DEEP story that even involves people debating about religion at some points. The art is amazing and the fact that its a hardcover makes it 10X better.
This even has REAL historical places in it.
The first Volume is kinda slow but its still amazing.
So even if you like it a little keep reading. It gets so much better and the stuff that happens will drop your jaw and make you cry.

5/5 SemiStars (Which is equivalent to a elephant riding a ball. Yes, its that good of a manga)

i love it

Awesome manga one of my favorites

Solid

by

"Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world."

...Oh, and uh--this 1st volume of Vinland Saga is pretty great.

Awesome!

Vikings!!!! I read One Piece and Oda always talks about how great vikings were and his inspiration. Then i read this and was blown away. Its gritty, bloody, ruthless, and a great story. Following the character from childhood to manhood its a great read.

A Vikings Tale

by -

A nice and steadily paced story. Great art, but maybe glorifying the viking lifestyle yet that's what i'd expect to see from a shonen manga. If you are looking to break away from the mainstream manga lately being zombies, demons, teenagers in high-school this is it.

The story is set in Northern Europe at the start of the 11th century with a group of Vikings besieging a Frankish fortress. The story from the first book i've read is rich and full of depth. The characters are strongly defined. The story is even strengthened due to its historical place naming. Can't wait to pick up the next volume after reading this one. The price isn't bad either especially considering it's a hardcover. Definitely not disappointed after purchasing.

Incredible Piece of Work

This first volume alone takes you on such an adventure following Thorfinns life. You get to experience the path his life took him on to become the man he does with the amazing artwork and writing you see between this beautiful hardcover

Must-read

by

Vinland Saga is absolutely a must-read series. A part history, part adventure story that captures the reader's attention immediately with stunning art and well defined characters and action.

Most of the story dwells in Thorfinn's past with his farther Thors. Thors plays a huge role in Thorfinn's future. Life in Reykjavik, Iceland (an area I very much want to visit) allows Thors to live by his motto "a true warrior does not need a sword." For Thorfinn, this falls on empty ears, but it will definitely be the central theme in the future.

Vikings!!! Need I say more?

by -

If you like the Vikings tv series, or vikings in general, or brooding badasses out for vengeance, or cold remorseless mercenaries, this is a great series. Warning though: this series does change tone over time.

This volume starts with a bang that gets you invested in the characters, then drops you into some lengthy backstory to explain how these characters are in the circumstances they are. The background info drags on a bit, but is rather necessary.

Perfect!

Absolutely AMAZING. I had heard great things about this series for years and finally started reading it. One of the best manga out there rivaling Berserk and Vagabond.

VINLAND SAGA A MASTERPIECE!!!!

by

Beautiful Edition

Beautiful Hardcover, I would recommend this to anyone for a quality manga reading experience.

A Field Guide to Parenting

by

No matter what a parent may hope for the future of their child, each person, ultimately, makes their own path—mistakes, warts, and all. Thors prowess as a warrior and shortcomings as a parent lead Thorfinn, his son, to a reckless pursuit of vengeance. It’s all the more sad as his father’s wish was to keep Thorfinn away from the brutality of war.

The art and storytelling in this volume are excellent. Many well-drawn backgrounds and a large cast of characters give the world real depth. Combat sequences are expertly drawn and clear. Facial expressions are realistic and varied. This is definitely a manga that deserves a spot on your shelf. Highly recommended!

Highly recommend

The story follows Thorfinn, a young mercenary on a quest for vengeance. It's not new in terms of a basic story layout but it stands out due to the character dynamic. What's interesting is that Thorfinn is being "raised" by the same man he's sworn to kill. The characters are relatable which makes learning about their backstories and motivations that much more exciting.

The art is beautiful and highly detailed. Backgrounds and facial expressions are the two things that really stood out to me. The eyes especially caught my attention.

One thing that disappointed me was, other than the colored pages, the rest of the book has that regular quality paper you find in most releases. With the sturdy hard cover and colored illustrations printed on high quality paper, I just assumed the paper used for the black and white pages would be of higher quality. It's just me nitpicking, though.

I definitely recommend purchasing this, and the other volumes as well! The spines look nice lined up.
