About Twilight of the Cockroaches DVD

Twilight of the Cockroaches was directed by Hiroaki Yoshida.

The cockroaches of Saito's apartment live in peace with their human host, who gives them lots of space to breed and plenty of leftovers to munch on. In the midst of these high living times, Naomi and Ichiro plan to get married and start a family. But when a hard-bitten stranger roach named Hans appears with news of war with the humans across the lawn, it foretells disruption-not only of Naomi and Ichiro's relationship, but of the hive's entire way of life.

Featuring animation by Madhouse, Twilight of the Cockroaches was a perennial favorite among the mid-90s anime fans. Combining live action and animated footage in sometimes stunning ways, it tells a sometimes funny, often tragic tale about the hubris of peace and the pain of war.

A Crazy Product of the Bubble Economy

by -

One of the oddest anime films of the 1980’s, this film is somewhat like “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, combing live action actors and backgrounds with superimposed cel animation. As the film is mostly from the view of the height of cockroaches, sometimes the filming doesn’t work too well and is hindered by the technology of the time. The story is apparently about how the director thinks the outside world views Japan’s focus on racial and cultural purity (but can feel very nationalistic at times), but works equally well as a satire on Japanese culture at the time or a comment on genocide. Due to the anamorphic cockroaches as the main cast, the film can get very surreal at times. Due to the poor source material, the DVD’s video looks pretty bad, but is far superior to existing laserdisc and VHS copies.

I am an exterminator.

by -

I am an exterminator. I think about this movie more than most.

Each time I enter what could best be described as a hellish cockroach situation so bad I wouldn't let a goldfish live in that place, let alone a human, I can't help but wonder, do they have their own little society? Have these roaches been living their best life, filled with love and laughter with their fellow cockroaches? Am I about to interrupt a wedding? Am I about to further traumatize some poor unsuspecting waifu/husbando cockroaches?

This movie has managed to affect me on the job, something no other anime movie can claim to have done for me. However, I am a professional. I bring the apocalypse to them.
