About Tokyo ESP Manga Volume 1
Tokyo ESP manga volume 1 features story and art by Hajime Segawa.
Rinka Urushiba’s world is turned upside down when she wakes up one day-after falling right through the floor. Encouraged by another ESPer who believes that Rinka’s destiny is to become a hero of justice, she soon learns to use her powers for good. It's not a moment too soon, as those with less-than-admirable ambitions descend on Tokyo with their own sets of superpowers. As the mysterious glowing fish flitting through the city skies gift powers seemingly at random, foes become friends and alliances are made and broken.
And what about that flying penguin?

It had me at the flying penguin
by Thomas J -
Very pleased with where this is going. Just enough strangeness to keep surprising you without going overboard. It doesn't feel weird for the sake of being weird. The font is a little off in some panels and isn't all that consistent but that's my only pet peeve.
And there's a flying penguin in the first chapter, what's not to like about that?
ESPecially fun

A very pleasant surprise. The art is great especially the facial responses, which were exaggerated but not overly so like a lot of comedy manga where they devolve into chibi. However the art wasn't the best part, the story is amazing as well. It has the feel of xmen evolution or static shock or a similar super hero show where they develop their powers and fight a different villain a day. I loved the character development, the plot twists and mistaken identity, the heroes having dark pasts, which all add to complex characters that are likable even if they are villains.
I also love that they're not over powered. Each ability is mediocre but depends on how they use it. There's also some cute interactions between the two main heroes, one seems super laid back and the other very serious which plays into the whole "there's two people, those who believe in miracles and those who don't".
Hidden Gem

I bought this series on a whim, and it was actually really great. Nothing particularly earth shattering, but it's an interesting (and funny!) action-superhero-dramedy romp.
Art was great. Be aware that while it does not start out as especially fan-servicey, it does get kind of risque with skimpy superhero-type outfits for some of the women from the middle of the series to the end.
Best part by far is that this series is chock full of pop culture references. What's nice is that they're mostly Western references (Star Wars, 300, Ghost Busters, etc.), so I don't feel like I'm missing any of the humor with obscure Japanese stuff. I laugh every time I see one character's face (though I won't spoil it). Highly recommended.
