About This Boy Can Fight Aliens DVD

This Boy Can Fight Aliens! is the first anime OVA of Soubi Yamamoto's Kono Danshi (This Boy) project.

When aliens suddenly invade the world, Earth seems to be fighting a losing battle until Arikawa, one of the defense command staff, accidentally discovers a young man lying on a hill. Tests soon prove the impossible: this one teenager, Kakashi, has the power to defeat the attackers! Unfortunately, Kakashi has also lost his memory, and with it the knowledge of how to actually use his power.

Moving Kakashi in with himself and his own commander, Shiro, Arikawa accidentally starts a strange triangle of emotions and relationships - a triangle that threatens the fate of the planet as Kakashi begins to question his own motivations!

Nothing good about this.

Ok... First off, It's Random, Has no true story, Graphics were bad, The whole thing just wasn't worth even $1. It had a lot of potential if they added decent Graphics and If they modified the Story so you get an IDEA to WHY the Aliens wish to battle him... But None of that happened, Simply don't waste your time, Won't even try buying/watching 'This Boy caught a Merman'

My Score
Story 1/10
Graphics 1/10
Beginning / Ending 0/10 / 0/10

Unique and Emotional

by

Story: 6/10
I'm not going to go into much detail since it would be spoilers.
The story is simple and has its flaws, since it never goes into detail about the aliens and why Kakashi has amnesia. However, this is made up by the story being sweet and emotional.

Animation: 6/10
The animation is quite unique. The animation is choppy and with lots of still frames. It's pretty impressive since it was created on a low budget and this was created almost entierly by one person. This is made up by the unique style and colorfulness(is this a word?). It's pretty decent seeing as hows it's the first OVA of Soubi Yamamoto's Kono Danshi (This Boy) project.

Sound: 7.5/10
The soundtrack fits very well with what is happening.

Characters: 7.5/10
Kakashi is fairly well developed. However, Arikawa and Shiro aren't so much. But they all have very good chemisty.

Overall: 7/10
I honestly liked the unique art style it had. The story wasn't all that great (lacked details) but it was still very touching.

Not really yaoi, barely shounen-ai

by -

I was disappointed with this DVD. It is marketed as yaoi and it is not. They could have gotten away with calling it shounen-ai , but just barely. The three main characters live together and two of them sleep in the same bed, any relationship is barely implied. They never explain why these three are really living together or what the relationship is between them. The story is barely there as there is no back story or explanation of anything. The animation is very choppy and hard to follow. I actually only liked the bonus story Robotica Robotics, which was a short bittersweet story that was much better than the main story and did actually have a shounen-ai theme.

Try to think outside the box

by

Knowing nothing going into it, this one was a little off to me. The story can be a little confusing. It felt like I looked away for a second and I missed an important detail. As it went on, it started to feel like those art films where you have to think of what the bigger picture is. You may have questions about what is going on, but just assume you do and ask the bigger questions. How do these characters feel in these situations? How do you not let obstacles slow you down and how do you overcome them? ...Or you could just see it as a confusing OVA. But hey, the artwork really knows how to set the mood. Blues, reds, and even detailed starry skies make this one an eye catcher. The animation ain’t your typical style and it takes a while to get used to, but I think it fits what it’s trying to accomplish. And the 3 shorts included are worth checking out and will make you understand and appreciate the creators “vision.”
