It isnt as serious as the blurb sounds

by -

Like most isekai the protagonist is overpowered and is surrounded by a harem and is cluess to their feelings but I still enjoyed this book as the protagonist is goofy (ie he tries act "normal" but is way off base) and he is determine to fulfill his dream of being a mastermind hiding in the shadows. He creates an organization to lead and an enemy to defeat but his tall tale turns out to be true. The novel tells the tale mostly through his eyes but we get short chapters through members of his organization and his female schoolmates eyes. If you like dramatic one liners, a goofy lead, and some swordplay take a chance on this book.

Somehow Things Work Out

by -

In the anime/book series Overlord, Ainz is thought of as a genius by his subordinates. They think his plans extend far into the future and cover every possibility, but in reality Ainz has no idea what they're talking about and is just attempting to go along with it. Take that plot line, add cults trying to destroy the world, secret organizations, and extend it into a novel length story, and you have The Eminence in Shadow. There's a lot of what I call coincidence humor, where things just seem to work out somehow and the protagonist isn't quite sure why but it's really amusing to follow. The book itself is well-written, translated well, and the characters were surprisingly likeable. Personally this wasn't my cup of tea which is why I gave it 4 stars, but I still enjoyed reading it. If you're looking for a book that isn't taking itself too seriously and will make you roll your eyes and laugh a lot, try this one.

The comedy disguised as a psychological thriller

by -

So, this book is hilarious. The author is obviously having a grand time throwing many of our usual anime cliches into a bag of what should be serious into something silly. We still get our serious moments for sure as there is a cult, and a terrible disease that’s literally turning girls into horrible melted blobs of their former selves.

Our main character is of course reincarnated. He gets a harem and has no clue. He pretends to be a genius mastermind just as he wishes and has no clue that all the “stories” he made up are all true. You have to be someone who enjoys seeing the crazy show of ironic happenstances of coincidence occur like puzzle pieces lining up for a grand finale to enjoy this series. The stories plot can be predictable but it’s going to be a fun ride just because the characters are who they are. So, there is some seriously great characterization in this novel. I can say this book may not be for everyone but I sure as hell love this book.

cliched but very enjoyable

by

I really enjoyed this book. It has the controversial OP MC trope that many seem to dislike. Some of the fights get repetitive and the harem aspect is definitely cliched. It is a really funny book that will keep you interested(did for me at least). The hardcover aspect is really nice as well, not sure why but I prefer it to softback. Probably why Overlord is my favorite LN. speaking of overlord... if you enjoyed overlords comedy aspects than this book is for you. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
