Heartbreaking, bittersweet, romantic, and utterly captivating.

After reading this book's predecessor, I was skeptical that another volume was needed, let alone could justify 300 pages. That was a gripping drama, but it suffered from unlikable characters, so more of the same wasn't too enticing. Fortunately, this turned out to be even better, thanks to strong character development, excellent pacing, and an enthralling, complicated, intensely dramatic love story that breaks your heart and then puts it back together again. I'm not sure the emotional payoff would be as strong without reading the first volume though, so I would still recommend starting there rather than skipping straight to this.

Whereas Kyoichi & Imagase were largely defined by one or two characteristics before, they're now much more three-dimensional characters whose emotional lives have depth and nuance. The last chapter, which makes up over half of the book, is practically a one-act play examining two flawed yet immensely human men struggling to belong. Hauntingly beautiful.
