Magical, Beautiful, and Heartwrenching
by B. Fox
Though magic, faerie creatures, and supernatural happenings are rampant in this show, it is not what the show is about but merely its setting. Chise is a very lonely and depressed individual so full of self-loathing that she even considered taking her own life however she was offered a chance to sell herself to someone who actually wants her: she took it. This single decision led her to meeting Elias, a mage of great power who showed her his world which placed her upon a path of self-healing, learning to enjoy the happy moments in her life, and to slowly but surely "Live". This show is an amalgamation of the beauty and ugly sides of humanity wrapped up in a magical world that is hidden in plain sight. Definitely worth seeing if you love fantasy and character driven stories.
A Great Example of Not Judging a Series by its Title

I tend to buy series blind, which sometimes works out well and other times doesn't. This was one of those times it did.
The series follows Chise and her skeletal-headed mage mentor Elias as they work out their rather unorthodox relationship (Elias bought Chise as she sold herself into slavery), but he frees her of her chains and instead makes her his apprentice, which is handled well and without the weird sexual undertones I was initially expecting.
One of my favorite things about this series is characters you'd think were one-time appearances appear in later episodes with greater importance and it never feels forced or unnatural. Most of the cast gets time to grow and their relationships with Chise/Elias feel organic for the most part.
The only gripe I have is the ending felt a tad rushed, but not so much to detract from the rest of the series. The artwork was fantastic, as was the soundtrack, and I have no complaints from the production side of things.
A different kind of love story

The dynamic of Chise and Elias is interesting.
Elias being a creature of darkness becoming the light for Chise, a girl who has been lost in a darkness of her own. A bit of an over simplification but it plays out wonderfully. If you're looking for feels, this will do the trick.
Story has a good pacing, accompanied by an understated melancholy sound track and fantastic art.
