So far, the black sheep of the Ghibli canon.
by Jon
Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro, tried his hand at producing a full length animated feature, but unfortunately it seemed as though he was biting off more than he could chew with this one. Although the animation is as lavish as ever and the music is haunting, the story and the characters feel very disjointed. By trying to compress the Ursula K. LeGuin books into one picture, TALES FROM EARTHSEA results with questions that are unanswered, and plot revelations that feel dissatisfying more than anything else. Goro would slightly find his foot with the subsequent FROM UP ON POPPY HILL, but TALES FROM EARTHSEA, at least as of now, remains the nadir of the Ghibli output. It's not a bad picture at all, just an unsatisfying one. Still, it might be worth a look. The dub is decent for the most part, with Cheech Marin and Timothy Dalton giving the best turns in the show.
