About Tableau Numero 20 Manga

Tableau Numero 20 features story and art by est em.

Ten years ago, while still a student, Maurice stumbled across an illustration in an artist's sketchbook that instantly captivated him. A drawing of a beautiful youth with sad, gentle eyes; an expression that spoke of love and forgiveness. Now settled into his successful career as an art restoration expert, Maurice is shocked by the sudden appearance of a young man who looks exactly like the one in the drawing. Who, in fact, insists that he is the one in the drawing... A collection of short stories by the incomparable est em.

Melancholy meditations on love

by -

This is essentially the manga equivalent of a beautiful song that makes you sad. The type that you listen to, and when it's over, you feel depressed, but at the same time, it was just such a wonderful song that the experience still counts as a positive one. Each of the five stories in this (somewhat surprisingly) brisk read leaves exactly that impression, with the experiences depicted of loss, pain, regret, and anguish that nevertheless serve to captivate and move the reader. And while it's true that this is technically BL, it's quite unlike a typical BL in terms of story structure, even those on the more introspective side. This, of course, is accentuated by est em's signature raw style, which only serves to heighten the emotion on display. It's not entirely what I expected, but it was still a marvelous read I would recommend to any genre fans looking for something more bittersweet than sugary.
