About Sword Art Online Progressive Manga Volume 3

Sword Art Online Progressive Manga Volume 3 features story by Reki Kawahara and art by Kiseki Himura.

Having reached the second floor of Aincrad, Asuna decides to have a player-controlled blacksmith upgrade her beloved sword, a rare Wind Fleuret - but when the unimaginable happens and the sword is shattered in the attempt, Kirito suspects foul play. Did the blacksmith really just happen to destroy an incredibly valuable item? And if not, is there any way to get it back? If there is a conspiracy of thieves, how can they be stopped before they spread too much mistrust? The game of death is bad enough already!

Note: This story is an alternate retelling of Sword Art Online from Asuna's point of view.

Much ado about nothing, skip!

While the other two SAO progressive manga novels have been engaging and a demonstration of how the SAO anime really should have been...this book is lacking immensely. For those looking for action contrary to Asuna's cover there isn't really any fighting here, just a mindless investigation of a matter that feels like it should belong in a detective novel instead of here. There's no impact or importance to the overarching plot and thus no tension. For those looking for the budding relationship between Kirito and Asuna it's also not here, unless you consider tired anime panty/ rom-com cliches as progress. Really you could skip this book and not even feel left out for the next volume, I can only recommend this to die-hard SAO fans or completionists.

A skippable volume in an otherwise engaging series

The mystery aspect of this volume was alright; it didn't leave much of an impression that I can recall. I've greatly enjoyed SAO Progressive so far for its deeper look into the 100-floor conquest but this one felt a bit like it was spinning its wheels.

The only other major point that stuck out in my memory of this volume is a tired and sexist cliche which I have no patience for anymore, that of the "girl who collects panties" which Asuna is disappointingly saddled with. That doesn't jive with the rest of her personality in my opinion and it seems to only be included for the presumed cishet male readers.

To end on a positive note: Argo the information broker continues to be a fantastic, snarky, and well-rounded side character I adore.
