Sword Art Online Aincrad Manga Volume 1 features story by Reki Kawahara and art by Tanako Nakamura.

In the year 2022, gamers rejoice as Sword Art Online - a VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) like no other - opens its virtual doors. Now players can take full advantage of the ultimate in gaming technology: NerveGear, a system that allows users to completely immerse themselves in the game world by manipulating their brain waves to create a wholly realistic gaming experience.

When the game goes live, the elation of the players quickly turns to horror as they discover that, for all its amazing features, SAO is missing one of the most basic functions of any MMORPG: a log-out button. Now trapped in the virtual world of Aincrad, their bodies held captive by NerveGear in the real world, users are issued a chilling ultimatum: conquer all one-hundred floors of Aincrad to regain their freedom. A great read and true to the source

This manga was gorgeous and followed the novel very well. I loved the art.

My only complaint is that it is thicker than most mangas since it is the complete Aincrad arc minus the side stories that were placed in the anime and collected in the second novel.

Other than that, I commend the artist for a faithful retelling of the original novel.

Not bad, but it could have been better

Let me start out by saying that I haven't read the original light novels but I have seen the anime and really enjoyed it and would put it in my top 5. The first manga volume of Sword Art Online wasn't bad, but it didn't make me engaged to it that much. I like in the show how it moved in a chronological order, but in the manga it jumps around a bit and left me a bit confused. The art was different at first, but I got used to it a few chapters in. Sometimes I couldn't tell what was going on because there was so much on the page like in the battle scenes. And some scenes felt a bit rushed. Scenes that were supposed to convey feeling or show character development were done in a few pages or just skipped. The last few chapters I enjoyed and reminded me why I love this story. Like I said I haven't read the light novels, so those might be better, but in my opinion I would say the anime is better than the manga. Overall, not bad, but it could have been better.
