About Summer Wars Blu-ray/DVD

The award-winning Summer Wars comes to Blu-ray and DVD!

Kenji is your typical teenage misfit. He's good at math, bad with girls, and spends most of his time hanging out in the all-powerful, online community known as OZ. His second life is the only life he has - until the girl of his dreams, Natsuki, hijacks him for a starring role as a fake fiance at her family reunion. Things only get stranger from there.

A late-night email containing a cryptic mathematic riddle leads to the unleashing of a rogue AI intent on using the virtual word of OZ to destroy the real world, literally. As Armageddon looms on the horizon, Kenji and his new "family" set aside their differences and band together to save the worlds they inhabit.

Summer Wars DVD/BD (Hyb)

Wonderful story about family. Kenji, essentially has none. Natsuki, on the other hand, has a wonderfully huge and complicated one. Every one of the members is well defined and leading them all is the grandmother who is more than she seems. This is an animated movie worth watching over and over. Look for the other movies by the same director, too. They're all good. :)

I Loved it

by

Summer Wars is one of those good family movies like studio ghibli movies. The art work is beautiful and the story is a fun one. Summer Wars has a little of everything from drama & romance to fighting & comedy. If you like ghibli movies then you will like this movie.

This was an interesting movie that I really enjoyed and watched several times over a couple of weeks. This movie was directed by the same director as Wolf Children and the Digimon movie. I thought the movie was really well done with an intriguing plot that had a good balance of fun, serious, and sad scenes.

Awesome Movie

by

I love this movie. My friend gave me a copy of this movie for my birthday a while back, but the disc turned out to be damaged, so I couldn't watch the whole movie. I bought a copy from here because it was the cheapest option I came across, and I tell you what, I loved it. Really entertaining and a good story. If you like the Boy and the Beast and Wolf Children, definitely watch this movie, you won't regret it.

A memorable movie

A young man named Kenji is dragged away by the girl of his dreams, Natsuki, to be her boyfriend while she visits her large extended family at her grandmother's birthday. While there Kenji gets an email with a problem that needs solving.....that leads to the almost destruction of the world.....oops.
With so many characters, it doesn't focus on the two leads very well but it's the family that makes this movie shine (especially the grandmother who is the absolute star of this movie)
A computer virus called Love Machine threatens the online world of OZ. OZ has real world businesses and governments in it so if you take over OZ you take over the world and can launch nukes that'll totally ruin your day.
This all-powerful virus is, of course, taken care of.......by a card game. A card game that isn't explained to us and thus we know little of the rules. To quote a review on YouTube: "That's right, you Koi Koi that MF! .... I have no idea what's going on"
A great movie BUY IT!!!

Facebook and Neopets walked into a bar...

This movie is just cute all around. As long as you don't think too hard about the whole rogue AI concept, because then you start eyeing your smart phone and Facebook account with suspicion. Luckily, we're not quuuuuite there, though Twitter and Google certainly seem to be trying hard. Nevertheless, it is a message to think about carefully. How far should we take artificial intelligence and how connected should we allow our online and offline lives to be? Hell, how connected should we allow our online accounts to be? Seems like Google and Facebook want you to log into everything with them these days. Anyway, this is a great movie and the Bluray/DVD combo pack is a steal. Kept the Bluray for myself and gave the DVD to my sister. Win-win.

Absolutely Fantastic

This anime is an absolute must have. The characters are great, the action is top notch and the story is both wonderful and heartfelt. You will have the feels, guaranteed.

Better in Japanese

by

What a crying shame that even Mamoru Hosoda's movies are being ruined by awful dubbing. (The Ghibli films being another unfortunate casualty.) Miserable overacting, flat writing, and zero emotion, not to mention miscast voices. The Japanese version is SO much better. Even Streamline could do a better job than Funimation (given they also did poorly on ESCAFLOWNE, no surprise). Anyway, this is a pretty good film. Not like the Ghibli movies, but decent overall. But PLEASE, watch only in Japanese and don't watch dubbed.

Trippy but winning family feud/internet world hybrid.

by

Mamoru Hosoda's second feature is quite a different beast compared to his debut feature THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME. This time the focus is on feuding families with a virtual fantasy internet subplot and a timid, nerdy hero who gets mixed up in all this. Sounds like a strange plot for a film, doesn't it? But it works, thanks to the glorious animation and always fascinating character developments. The climax in particular will have you on the edge of your seat. The dub by Funimation is also very well done, with great chemistry throughout.

My favorite animated movie.

The values expressed in this movie are ones that I feel resonate with myself. It's family oriented approach to the problems expressed made me not only value this movie very highly, but also taught me to be thankful for the family/relationships I have around me.

I hope everyone with an iota of interest in anime give this movie a shot, you will enjoy.

One Of Hosoda's Best

by

A math-wiz named Kenji is invited by his friend Natsuki over to her grandmother's house so they can pretend to be boyfriend and girlfriend. From there, it's up to our leads to keep the facade up so no one in this tight-knit family is suspicious that the whole thing is a lie. This setup has been done many times before and you can probably predict where the story will go with that thread, and not wrong.

If that's all the film had, then it would be an unremarkable film with a great presentation. But thankfully, the plot isn't focused on Kenji and Natsuki's relationship to each other as it is about Natsuki's whole family and their relationships as a whole. And that's where the strength of this film is.

Just by watching this film, you'll get a strong sense of what it means to be in a large family. You'll see how a family can be torn apart by the past, and how it can be brought back together to solve a crisis.

If you want to see Hosoda at his best, look no further than Summer Wars.
