Live Action Space Battleship Yamato

For the price I'll give a 5 instead of a 4. Also I will not give any spoilers about the movie here. The story is the same like in the animation just that they made a few changes to it and added a few things too. Overall I thought it was a good version of a TV show I remember seeing a along time ago & more recently the new 2199 & 2202 too. I had always wanted to see what a live action Space Battleship Yamato would look like since they have done live action movies of manga like Gunhead and in the US the movies Pacific Rim & Pacific Rim:Uprising plus others too. Another nice thing about this movie is that you can watch it in either the original Japanese and English too!!

In the end if you're a fan of the original Space Battleship Yamato anime you should like this live action version of it. Also if you can watch it with a open frame of mind the minor changes/additions to the story then you will like it!

One of the better live-action adaptations of a classic anime

Anime live-action adaptations do NOT have a great reputation. They're on par with Hollywood for missing the point of storylines and characterizations and frequently suffer from cheap production values that only make poor writing and casting decisions stick out even more.
The SFX in this movie are not Hollywood-level but serviceable for an alleged $30mil budgeted movie. The leads were charismatic and believable as Kodai and Yuki Mori. They condensed the basics of the Series 1 Yamato into a 2-hr film and for the constraints I think did an admirable job with the adaptation. Despite what they did with the alien races, I'd watch this film several times over (5-8) before I'd ever watch any Western sci-fi franchise film made in the last 20 yrs!
Despite its funding and time issues, this a better SF film than MSM Hollywood has made for a long time. It has hope, heroism, and drama. It made me feel in a good way. I still like Yamato. I am apathetic about "Star" movies made after 2005.
