About Space Adventure Cobra Blu-ray

Space Adventure Cobra contains episodes 1-31 of the anime directed by Osamu Dezaki and Yoshio Takeuchi.

Seeking reprieve from a painfully ordinary 9-to-5 existence, mild-mannered office worker Johnson visits the TM corporation, a company that sells virtual dreams. In Johnson's dream adventure, he's the notorious space pirate Cobra! Accompanied by his android partner Lady Armaroid, Cobra fights the lowlife scum of the Pirate Guild by day and saves sultry sirens of space by night.

After the journey is over, events unfold that bring reality into focus. His experience wasn't a dream at all - it was a reawakening of his buried past! With the most feared weapon in the universe, the Psycho Gun, Cobra sets out into the galaxy in pursuit of love, fortune and fame.

Special Features: Interview with Space Adventure Cobra Creator Buichi Terasawa, English Pilot Episode and Trailers, Brand New English Dub for Episodes 1 and 2.

A classic series, now in crystal clear HD

by -

This Blu-ray has everything you'd want in a re-release of a classic series such as Space Adventure Cobra. The video quality is amazing, which is good since the series has amazing visuals. The audio quality is pretty good as well. The icing on the cake is the plentiful extras. Discotek has put in all the extras from the old Nozomi DVDs along with some new stuff, like the experimental dub for episodes 1 and 2. Overall, I'd highly recommend this Blu-ray to both fans of Space Adventure Cobra and people who are interested in the series.

Lupin meets Total Recall

by -

A couple of years back I discovered the Space Cobra adventure game on Sega CD. Fast forward to a few months ago where I saw this set go on pre-order. The show feels a lot like Lupin in space. Great character designs, sexy ladies, non-stop action.
As for the Blu-ray release, the picture looks fantastic, everything is clear, and the colors pops. It's displayed in its original format of 4:3. I'm going to knock a star for sound. I have a pretty basic surround sound setup, but when I play the 5.1 audio, it sounds really echoey or robotic. At first, I just thought maybe the audio was trashed due to the age of the show. However, when I switched to stereo it was really crisp and seemed to correct the tin can sound.
As for the extras, it looks like they wanted to try dubbing cobra but didn't feel like it would work out in the long run. The voice acting wasnt bad, but considering most classic anime that isnt already dubbed is nitche I can see where they were coming from.

Best version of Cobra to watch

This bluray is superb! Discotek has done it again and given an old series the proper release it deserves. I highly recommend the Space Adventure Cobra TV series as the best intro to the Cobra franchise.

80’s Joe Gillian in HD

Cobra. Love it. Excellent blu ray. Perfect little package containing the exceptional anime that is Space Adventure Cobra. It’s so good that I, who never double dips on anime, actually purchased this even though I own the out of print DVD’s. This was much cheaper, too than what I originally paid for those. Excellent picture quality, excellent menus, just perfect. Don’t sleep on Cobra.

Amazing Transfer of a Fun Show

by -

As many have said, Cobra is very similar to Lupin in a lot of ways, but with a sci-fi twist.

However, that comparison - while accurate - doesn't quite do justice to how weird and trippy the world of Cobra is.

Cobra goes from searching for rare space artifacts to infiltrating a corrupt rugby/baseball league all while on the run from the Pirate's Guild, the source of some great over-the-top villains for Cobra deal with.

Needless to say, if the above sounds interesting to you, and you love cheesy 80s Japanese music, then the first Space Adventure Cobra series is probably something you should, at the very-least, look into.

The Blu-ray itself looks fantastic. The psychedelic designs of all the backdrops, planets and characters are what colorful HD transfers like this were meant for.

And, as a nice bonus: a couple episodes from the unfinished English dub. This is why I love when Discotek Media gets their hands on stuff. Yet another example of lost dub-media saved by their releases.

Another Stellar Release from Discotek

by -

Another gem here from the great folks at Discotek. PQ and AQ are top-notch. Johnson lives a boring life and desires to be more. It's suggested that he visit a company which allows customers experience dreams as if they are reality. In his dreams or is it reality, he is Cobra, a notorious space pirate who fights the evil Pirate Guild and saves beautiful women from danger at night. If you like James Bond, Star Wars, and spaghetti westerns, you will probably love Space Adventure Cobra. Discotek also adds a very informative interview from series creator, Buichi Terasawa about Cobra. Discotek also adds the English pilot episode which I only sampled but seemed decent enough, English dubs for the first two episodes, and trailers of previous home video releases which were very cool. All in all this was a standout release and in this reviewer's humble opinion the best release of 2020 and I thank Discotek for putting out this old classic and to discover it for the first time.
