About Shuna's Journey Manga (Hardcover)

Shuna's Journey Manga features story and art by Hayao Miyazaki presented in full-color in a hardcover edition with dust jacket.

From legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki comes a new manga classic about a prince on a quest for a golden grain that would save his land, never before published in English!

Shuna, the prince of a poor land, watches in despair as his people work themselves to death harvesting the little grain that grows there. And so, when a traveler presents him with a sample of seeds from a mysterious western land, he sets out to find the source of the golden grain, dreaming of a better life for his subjects.

It is not long before he meets a proud girl named Thea. After freeing her from captivity, he is pursued by her enemies, and while Thea escapes north, Shuna continues toward the west, finally reaching the Land of the God-Folk.

Will Shuna ever see Thea again? And will he make it back home from his quest for the golden grain?

Emonogatari?

by -

According to the notes of the translator, that's what this book is. (Not a manga) I'd describe it as a graphic novel with heavy narration directly laid over the images unbubbled. The narration feels like "Prince Valiant" comics. From the outside it looks like a hard-cover book.

The story is loosely based on the Tibetan legend "The Prince Who Turned into a Dog". Over-summarized: a prince of a poor kingdom goes on a quest for better grain to help his subjects who are surviving, but not thriving. The outside world is revealed to have much brutality, and later the supernatural is encountered.

If you like stories best described as "queer" (strange) (e.g. "Spirited Away", "Princess Mononoke" and "Mushishi") you will probably like this book. An excellent story, my only qualm is I'd like to know more about the supernatural, but it is likely deliberately left obscure so its impact isn't lessened.

A very quick read, clean, can be read in public.
