Disappointing

I had mixed opinions about the first volume, but ultimately found this one to be pretty disappointing. It retreads a lot of the ground covered in the first, instead of advancing things. And there is a sudden, off-putting tonal shift where things get very dark. It answers a lot of questions as to how the world came to be as it is, but the resolution is ultimately unsatisfying. There are also a lot of missed opportunities to develop the relationship between the lead women - it often feels more like jokes or misunderstandings than a romance.

It basically carries over the same spirit and themes as the first book, as well as the basic plot, but now the focus is on vengeance for Laplace instead of Tanya. So it's somewhat "more of the same" with some different details about the characters and their world added along the way.
It's decidedly not a romance story and I don't think it pretends to be (the fact that RS doesn't categorize it under romance should also be a rather enormous hint). Tanya and Laplace definitely seem pretty into each other, so to that extent it belongs to the yuri genre, but romantic love is never set up as the focus of things. So look elsewhere if you want a satisfying romance story.
For me, I let myself go along with the author's over-the-top style of rage-mixed-with-humor that was established in the first book. It was enjoyable for me in its own way, but I'd never call it a must-read.
