About Sexiled Novel Volume 1

Sexiled: My Sexist Party Leader Kicked Me Out, So I Teamed Up With a Mythical Sorceress! Novel Volume 1 is written by Ameko Kaeruda and features art by Kazutomo Miya.

Tanya Artemiciov is a talented Mage-class adventurer who just got kicked out of her party by a sexist scumbag. So what's a girl to do? Go to the wasteland and blow stuff up of course! One small problem though: she inadvertently frees a mythical Sorceress named Laplace who was sealed away for the past 300 years... Surprise! Turns out this so-called "wicked" Sorceress is actually pretty cool. Laplace wants to start a party of her own, Tanya wants revenge, and the solution is obvious: team up. It's time to kick ass, kiss girls, and dismantle the patriarchy!

Refreshing Change of Pace for Light Novels!

by -

Sexiled is quite unique in the world of light novels; it was inspired as a feminist fantasy the author wrote in response to the Tokyo Medical University scandal in 2018 (look it up!). While this background could lead to a book that reads more like a screed than an entertaining story, author Ameko Kaeruda has made a fun debut for a light novel series that I eagerly look forward to reading more of!

The main characters are written well, such that you want to see them succeed and thrive as they overcome the challenges the world throws at them, both in terms of monsters and rivals and in terms of systemic sexist thought. The illustrations are also very nice, and are placed in the right parts of the novel so that they aren't referring to something that happened three pages previously.

Overall, a great book from J-Novel Club that I hope continues on for quite some time!

I did not enjoy this one bit. I was expecting it to be super fun to read, but instead what I got was a forcefeeding of overly hamfisted nonsense. Somehow, Tanya, our MC, has been in a party with a sexist pig for 5 years. Suddenly he kicks her out, to the unanimous vote of the rest of the party. Despite said pig, Ryan, having always been this way, this somehow comes as a shock to Tanya. From there, she encounters a sorcerer trapped for some long period of time, the two battle, and then decide to team up.

I didn't like the writing, it felt equally amateurish to the message it was giving. From the second page: "What? I'm not your babe. And don't touch my a--!" It just feels... very tell don't show, very juvenille, and very difficult to enjoy. Art was good. Would not bother to continue.

Great FUN

Alright I bought this for the cover and was not expecting much... I am for equal rights for all but it still was a little preachy. That said.
I had a great time reading this! The idea for the two main characters is cool and who does not love the idea of revenge. I liked the build of the girls and the story read fast.
I am excited to get the next volume.

There were parts of the book that were enjoyable. I liked the world building, some of the characters were handled well, and there are some satisfying moments of the main characters getting their revenge.

However, I don't think I would recommend it. The writing feels amateurish, and the message is delivered in a very hamfisted way. The odds are so cartoonishly stacked against women, and the men are all so scummy that it's hard to take things seriously. It also suffers from the typical overpowered main character who never faces any real struggles, and I didn't feel any real romantic chemistry between the main women despite it being marketed as yuri.

Flawed but fun

I finally took a chance on this after having read the same author's "A Lily Blooms in Another World." It was a bit better than my expectations after reading what others have written about it.

The writing itself is indeed rather juvenile in tone, but at the same time there's a very strong sense that the author is "having a lot of fun" with things. It's basically 180+ pages that combines the author's desire to vent anger at sexism through a fictional fantasy world with over-the-top jokes, sarcasm, and slapstick humor.

Honestly, I never "expect much" from a light novel. I expect to finish one feeling entertained and maybe to feel like it might have promoted one or two "values" along the way for young adults. I definitely felt entertained, and it expresses its own ideas in a way that could be more graceful, but I feel like the author consciously decided to do away with "grace." And I'm OK with that.
