An awesome re-issue!

by

If you're a fan of sailor moon, than this is the set to get. The bonus features are great and give a great behind the scenes of how things are done. They also give you the original announcement video and some con footage. All in all, this is a great set. Yes there are some minor video issues. No, it doesn't take away from the viewing experience. If you're looking for video errors, you will find them, but these episodes are loads and worlds better than the crappy ADV films release way back when. The dubbing is great and having them on bluray is a great treat. Not to mention the awesome looking artbox you get for buying this limited edition set. I say support the release and get ready to relive sailor moon again and even better than before!

Refusing to order due to distribution fault

by

My release calendar for Sailor Moon under Viz Media's stewardship remains frozen on May 19, 2014. The official on-demand stream of the 90's anime STILL HAS NOT STARTED here in Canada. I have placed Viz Media under indefinite boycott until that stream begins. That is the only way Viz will earn any of my money.

A grand return to the moonlight

by

The re-release of the classic Sailor Moon series has been something that was long-anticipated by fans for years. That we finally get to see the series uncut, with a new voice cast, is truly a thing of beauty. True, one or two of the voices are slightly grating, but after a few episodes the actresses seem to get a hang of the roles they're playing and the voices sound more natural. The dialogue has been improved upon as well, reverting to the original Japanese names for people and places instead of those given by DiC and Cloverleaf.

I can't speak to the video quality, how terrible other people might say it is, because in all honesty I'm not dreadfully picky about such things. For a series from two decades ago, playing on nothing but an XBox One, the series looks just as good as I would have expected, and so I am quite happy with it.

All in all, it's worth the buy, especially for the collector's edition, which comes with a wonderful artbook and packaged in a beautiful box capable of housing both parts of the first season.

Poor encoding and video quality ruin an otherwise wonderful release

by

I grew with Sailor Moon, watching the old DIC version every chance I could. So to be able to watch the series, uncut and dubbed in english was a dream come true!

I watched the first Blu-Ray. The picture quality was alright. I had hoped for better, but knowing this was a digital remaster I did not expect perfect quality. Colors are bright, but the series takes on a more water-color look than what I remember and so the lines are not as crisp as I had hoped.

The real issue came when I popped in the DVD.
First, in my Blu-Ray player it was obvious that this DVD looks TERRIBLE. There was heavy pixelation throughout and looked much closer to a 480p Youtube video than a DVD. Throughout the opening, I could not even tell that Usagi's eyes were blue in half of the shots. The video quality really was that poor.

'Well, OK', I thought, 'Maybe my Blu-ray player is trying to Upscale the DVD and that's messing with the quality.' So I head to my older TV with a DVD player, and play it in there. The entire picture was surrounded by a huge black box. It was now obvious that VIZ had not properly encoded the DVD. The DVD plays the (Originally 4:3) series in a 16:9 aspect ratio, with the black bars hardcoded on each side of the video. Meaning that in my older 4:3 TV, I first get the black bars on the side, and then two more black bars on the top and bottom. This issue is not limited my copy, as it's been reported by multiple other people.

As such, I cannot recommend this release. Please do not support VIZ's terrible handling of a classic show.

Buy the Cardcaptor Sakura set from NIS America instead. Even if it's more, it's certainly better handled than this sad, sad release.

Great!!

Love this release! I warmed up to the new dub voices pretty quickly. Video quality is pretty good considering how old the show is, although there is a little ghosting in some episodes. interactive menus are pretty, loved the limited edition coin. Overall a great release!

Great Revival of my Childhood

by

I loved Sailor Moon when I was little, and when I heard they were releasing the original anime with a new dub, I knew I was going to own it. I'm so glad that I do! Now my daughter and I can enjoy the magic of Sailor Moon together!

Rich Anime...Poor Presentation..

by

My rating is not for the anime which is a 5/5 but for the quality of the eps that Viz try to bluray

First I have to admit I love the packaging and booklet , comes with the bluray and DVD and the coloring of the package I love

BUT the quality of the eps WHAT HAPPENED, there is so much cropping and ghosting that watching it on Hulu is actually better quality then the actual bluray release whuch is really disappointing in a way

What upsets me is in a podcast that Viz pretty much laughed at the errors and they actually said they won't fix it and also said "for people that bought it they can just think they have a rare collectible" ....WHO SAYS THAT?..HONESTLY????

Sadly as a sailor moon fan I will buy the rest and I will keep you all informed and hoping the remaining releases come out a lot better

PLUS for people that pre-ordered it comes with a sailor moon coin which I felt was neat ;)

When will we get perfect Sailor Moon sets in the US?

by -

I don't have the same problems with the video that other people are complaining about. I think the series looks great on blu-ray, and this is certainly the best US release of Sailormoon to date. People seem to forget that the old sets looked like garbage.

But this is far from a perfect release. The subtitles are small, white, and often blend into the background, making them hard to read. There are no Japanese special features, and the bonuses we get are completely boring.

I like how they're releasing the series. I like that we get a nice box to house the half-season sets together. However, I think the box, disc, and menu art are bland and uninspired. Boring clipart over a generic fade background with sparkles.

Still, this is the best presentation of Sailormoon in the US thus far. I'd rather have this set than no set.

Moonie

by -

While I admit that I have a newfound frustration with the content - "Gee, I wonder who the moon princess is. Maybe she's moon-themed. Maybe she has a tiara. Maybe it's a magical moon tiara from the moon... yeah, definitely Venus" - I'm enjoying this release.

I love it

by -

Overall, for a show that is over 20 years old, I thought this turned out well. I watched the Blu-Ray, and it was great. Each disc had some artwork to look at, and the menus were nice.
At some points when watching the show, the picture seems to get fuzzy or split. It doesn't happen very often, though, and I think the quality is decent.
The box is a very pretty box. The booklet is also full of artwork and has character bios as well as episode synopses. It is a paperback book.
I think the release was nice, and it was great to get back into Sailor Moon.

Sailor Moon Nostalgia

by -

I was super excited to see these coming out to Blu-Ray/DVD. I grew up watching Sailor Moon and getting this made my day. I love being able to get both the Blu-ray and DVD discs in one set. It is beautiful to watch, it cleaned up nicely for being so old (back with VHS's) and now being put on Blu-Ray discs. I love getting to watch it in the original Japanese and the new dub is very good (but I miss the original dub that I grew up with). The price is good for everything you get. I highly recommend this to all Sailor Moon fans.

Excellent Product, Best Video/Audio Quality So Far!

by -

The packaging was excellent, the chipboard box was gorgeous, the art book is a great addition, and the episodes themselves look and sound great (in both English and Japanese). Really thrilled with this purchase and would love to keep collecting these Sailor Moon releases, seems like Viz is really hitting it out of the park!

A Gorgeous Return to 90's Sailor Moon

by -

A beautiful beginning to the classic anime. Season one, part one comes in this beautiful pink box with room for season one, part two. It is completely uncensored, unlike the first English dubbing, and is true to the original Japanese release. Every moonie must have this in their collection!

In the name of the Moon, this wins every time!

by -

The quality of video and audio blew me away. Extremely happy with the updates to the series in this release on Blu-ray.

Having seen on TV and randomly after, I thought I knew what to expect - this goes far above and beyond expectations.

If you didn't experience late 80's - early 90's, this series can feel like a blast from the past. Watching it all over again, I feel the show still has a timeless heart to it you don't often see these days.

Having previously watched when I was younger, watching this with the whole family is a treat. The S.O. had never seen it, and was only mildy interested until we started watching - now they and the kids can't wait for the next season (sitting nicely on the shelf)!

Specific to the Limited Editions, the box and the postcards are really nice.

Slightly alarmed with a box at first - tiny corner of the paper was not glued correctly but resolved easy.

*No video problems on Blu-ray - and I am constantly picky about the quality of video experience.
