About The Rose of Versailles Part 1 Limited Edition DVD

This limited edition of The Rose of Versailles Part 1 contains episodes 1-20.

General Jarjayes, desperate for a son to preserve the family name and noble standing, names his newborn daughter "Oscar" and chooses to raise her as a boy. Fourteen years later, Oscar is a masterful duelist, marksman, and the newly appointed Commander of the French Royal Guards. Her first task: to protect Marie Antoinette, who is engaged to the French prince and future king, Louis-Auguste.

Even though the planned marriage should provide both countries with some much needed peace and prosperity, the French court is a dangerous place. Marie's youthful naivete makes her an easy target for those who wish to see the monarchy overthrown. Oscar soon finds herself both defending Marie's reputation from those who seek to discredit her and protecting her life from those who wish to kill her.

Meet Saber's Ancestor

by -

An excellent historical drama, "The Rose of Versailles" is 35+ years old, and holds up beautifully. Collection 1 starts during Louis XV's reign; 'sparkle-shots' abound as a young Marie takes in the excesses of Versailles. There's no skimping on court intrigue and classic shoujo drama. Characterizations of historical figures are interesting and fair; Marie Antoinette is not a 1D caricature.

The best reason to watch this series is Oscar de Jarjayes--a career-military noblewoman brought up as a man(her gender-bending seems to be an 'open secret' at court) to satisfy her father's conceit. Strong-willed, independent, formidable but not without compassion, you want her with you, not against you. Saber from the 'Fate' franchise and Urza from 'Fairy Tale' are but two of innumerable anime swordswomen that can trace their pedigree to Oscar.

Also a great show to maybe get youngsters interested in history--check it out!

This series is incredible. I purchased it, sight unseen, to take advantage of the birthday sale (I’m always looking for new things to watch and prefer DVDs) This was one of the best, most touching series I've ever seen. I've been telling all my friends about it - I can't recommend it enough. The French Revolution setting makes it similar to La Chevalier Deon, which I also like, but this series blows that one out of the water with the depth of its emotions. This is the only anime that I literally re-watched for a second time immediately after my first viewing - it's that good.

While the 70s character designs take a few episodes to get used to, I’d just finished watching Princess Knight (circa 1967) when I watched this, and this animation is an incredible improvement made just 12 years later. This show had both myself and the friend I watched it with in tears multiple times. As soon as we finished watching, we starting looking for more Rose of Versailles merch for our collection.
