About Requiem of the Rose King Manga Volume 1

Requiem of the Rose King 1 features story and art by Aya Kanno.

Richard, the ambitious third son of the House of York, believes he is cursed, damned from birth to eternal darkness. But is it truly fate that sets him on the path to personal destruction? Or his own tormented longings?

Based on an early draft of Shakespeare's Richard III, Aya Kanno's dark fantasy finds the man who could be king standing between worlds, between classes, between good and evil.

Intriguing, fascinating and unique

This series easily becomes my favorite manga after the first volume. The story has a mysterious and suspended air. With the plot evolves around Richard who was born as a sign of bad luck and hated by his mother, he has a dark personality and cares for nothing but the victory of his father. However, as fate likes to play on him, Richard met King Henry who is his father's enemy. Richard's major weakness is his physical body, since he is either female or male. The story takes an interesting path in creating the plot and the main characters. It's not a typical shoujo manga with light-hearted and fluffy feeling. It's very dark and can be depressing. However, after the closing book, I can only say "Wow", since it was such an intense and fascinating read.

Addictive drama series

The series is a bit confusing at first (especially for those not familiar with Shakespeare or the War of the Roses), but upon re-reading it, it became immersive and incredibly addicting. I would suggest maybe checking the characters and their house allegiance at the start of v2 to better sort out the characters.

I just want to start by saying that the art in this manga is absolutely incredible! Like wow! Gorgeous!

As for the story, I'm a little torn. The concept sounded really intriguing so I decided to pick it up and give it a read. It was interesting, although I was a little bit confused throughout. I think if I knew more about Shakespeare and the War of the Roses I would understand the context of this story better, and I would probably enjoy it more then. I think I'll look more into it, and give this volume a reread before deciding if I want to continue with the series or not. But I think the context of the story is something to keep in mind though if you want to read this, or you might find yourself a bit confused like I was.

cool cover and cooler story

I really enjoyed Aya Kanno's work, I've never read any other manga from them but I really enjoyed their perspective and inspiration of Shakespeare's play. to see a hermaphrodite or intersex person portrayed in such a manner is quite interesting and glad to see it wasn't sexualized, that would be desisting also due to the fact that Richard is a minor.

Dark and Lovely

This series is a reimagining of Shakespeare's "Richard III" with a key pivot on the suggestion of Richard as intersex. We follow Richard from childhood on to the eventual throne, political twists everywhere. As a Cliff Notes edition of Shakespeare, it's not ideal, but as a trip thru Shakespeare's world, it's strange and beautiful. The story is full of tension and emotion, easy to get wrapped up in the drama. The characters and the webs they're weaving are always odd and arresting. Worth the ride, and should end in under 20 volumes so fear not.
