About Red Cliff: Original International Version Blu-ray

In Red Cliff, power-hungry Prime Minister-turned-General Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) seeks permission from the Han Dynasty Emperor to organize a southward-bound mission designed to crush the two troublesome warlords who stand in his way, Liu Bei (You Yong) and Sun Quan (Chang Chen). As the expedition gets underway, Cao Cao's troops rain destruction on Liu Bei's army, forcing him into retreat.

Liu Bei's military strategist Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) knows that the rebels' only hope for survival is to form an alliance with rival warlord Sun Quan, and reaches out to Sun Quan's trusted advisor, war hero Zhou Yu (Tony Leung). Vastly outnumbered by Cao Cao's brutal, fast-approaching army, the warlords band together to mount a heroic campaign - unrivaled in history - that changes the face of China forever.

A True Chinese Epic

This film details one of the most important battles in Chinese history, and was China's attempt to create a true big budget epic in a Hollywood style as opposed to the more well known "floating" martial arts or dramas. It succeeded.

It borrows its narrative mostly from the heavily embellished Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, edging it towards historical fiction rather than a straight chronicle of a historical event. This isn't surprising considering how the fiction has long-since superseded the fact in China. However, it does include aspects from the true history to improve the narrative.

Director John Woo proves he's still got it here, and we have impressive action scenes interposed within a solid dramatic narrative. No expense is spared on the production, and it shows. All told, this is a treat.

A condensed version is available for those with a shorter attention span, but this is by far the superior version.
