Venture Into Lodoss

by -

The original light novel that led to the creation of a hit franchise is finally available in English. I love fantasy, and Lodoss (also Crystania and Rune Soldier) has been a favorite of mine for many years, so I was overjoyed that Seven Seas decided to release first novel, The Grey Witch, in English. I read the entire book and took no issue with the translation/adaptation. The entire time I was reading the book I couldn't stop smiling. There is a ton of backstory included that was left out of the OVA adaptation, so the next time I give it a rewatch it will be an even more enjoyable experience.

Aesthetic-wise, Seven Seas also knocked it out of the park. This hardback book is absolutely gorgeous with gold foiling that covers faux black leather. I actually cried the first time I laid eyes on it because it looks so stunning in person.

If you're a fan of fantasy, please pick up this book to encourage the sequels to be released. The cursed island continent of Lodoss awaits you.

Really Meh

by -

This novel was a solid "okay" to me. It wasn't overtly bad, but it wasn't great by any stretch. I went in blind, only really knowing that it sounded like a high fantasy novel. While it has all of the high fantasy elements (elves, dwarves, magic, etc.), the characters all just seemed so flat and one dimensional to me. After I finished the novel, I did some additional research and discovered that it's supposed to be based off of what was basically a Dungeons & Dragons campaign that the author put together. I have to admit that I know zilch about D&D, so maybe I wasn't the intended audience. So, readers with that kind of role-playing background might enjoy it more.
I will say that presentation-wise, this book is really nice. It's got a really nice faux leather texture for the hard cover, and the gold trim on the cover, back, and spine really pops. It looks great on the bookshelf, at least.
