Classic Fantasy Anime series.

RECORD OF LODOSS WAR OVA was one of the finest examples on how to do a swords and sorcery fantasy right, and although it may seem quaint compared to more modern attempts, it still holds up surprisingly well, with gorgeously rendered (if limited) animation by the folks at Madhouse, lavish music, and a quick, roller coaster pace that keeps one invested through all 13 episodes despite the somewhat scattered flow of the story. The dub is also surprisingly good for a 1996 production, highlighted by Lisa Ortiz's debut performance as Deedlit. The OVA looks absolutely fantastic in this BD release, easily besting the CPM DVD by far. Also included is the lesser "Chronicles of the Heroic Knight" series on DVD, but that show has neither the polish nor the same timeless appeal as its predecessor. Still, having both series on a reasonably priced package IS a beneficial bonus. If you're a fantasy fan, this is a must.

Decent remaster of a classic series

Still enjoyable all those years later. The OVAs aged well, the TV series is still "ok". The picture could have used a bit more cleaning up, but still looks good on a 4K TV.

OVA and DVDs Are Not Story and Sequel!

by -

Tough one to review, because the set contains 2 very different pieces. The OVA is stunning (if you don't mind old-style art). The story classic D&D inspired Fantasy. The TV series should be viewed not as a sequel, but as an alternate world, since although featuring some of the same characters, dead ones return, some crucial events are forgotten, and old friends become new encounters. Art is highly uneven. Plot is in many ways a mirror of OVA, but Spark and Co handle situation differently so it unfolds differently. Overall, once I accepted this wasn't a sequel, I could enjoy. "Second part" endings are very silly, but actually present a coherent story of their own. OVA is 5 stars. TV about a B (or 3+). Thus four star ranking.

Loved the OVA, TV series...not so much

Madhouse Studios did a great job on the OVA series, it was considered top-notch animation back in the day. However, the TV series was produced by AIC, and the production values are of lesser quality plus, none of the Japanese VAs in the OVA reprise their roles in the TV series either.

While it sounds best to choose the English Dub version, there are also issues with the Dubbed version of "Chronicles of Heroic Knight" as well. Suffice to say, several VAs in the TV series were replaced/removed in some episodes too. For example, Lisa Ortiz whom I also consider a great VA is replaced in episodes 20-21 by A.J. Sparks because of scheduling issues and incompetence by the sound studio. Several other VAs in the English Dub were also replaced/removed in a similar way...which is certainly annoying either way you look at the Sub/Dub controversy.

Regardless, the OVA is still worth owning in 1080p / 4:3 format, but TV series is 480p / 4:3 format.
