About RahXephon Steelbook Blu-ray

RahXephon Steelbook contains episodes 1-26 of the anime, plus the movie, Pluralitas Concentio, both directed by Yutaka Izubuchi.

For 15 years, the human race has fought an ongoing battle against the Mu, the alien invaders who have trapped the city of Tokyo inside an impenetrable dome where time flows in a different path and the mind-wiped citizens have no idea that their city has been conquered. But as Earth's military begins to briefly breech the walls, one young man starts to realize that something is very wrong. That nothing is quite as it seems. And when he makes contact with a woman from outside, he learns that he, himself, is somehow at the center of the entire alien plan. A plan that will literally re-write reality itself.

Prepare for an epic saga of love, war and time as the complete television series and feature film versions of the anime classic are unleashed in the ultimate steelbook collection of RAHXEPHON.

Special Features: Special 1 & 2, Fate of Katun Music Video, Production Art & Sketches, Original Japanese Cover Art, Japanese Previews & Promos, Interview with Hiroki Kanno and the Japanese Staff & Cast, Interview with English Cast, Clean Opening Animation, and Clean Closing Animation

Overture...Crescendo

by -

The steelbook sits nicely on a shelf--beautiful, clean artwork wrapping around the slip cover, the case, and the discs. However, they chose to stack the discs. Sentai released BIG O in a similar set, but they used flap trays. I can't see why they would opt out for this show.

The extras are ported over from the DVD extras, with a notable omission: ADV released each individual volume with booklets filled with additional interviews, artwork, mecha info, cultural notes, etc....all gone.

The a/v presentation is certainly an upgrade from those older DVDs. Since this is still a show from 2001, some of the art doesn't have the same...weight in an HD presentation as older shows receiving a similar treatment do.

In short, is this set worth it? No, unless you're jonesing to build a steelbook collection. If you just want to own the show, wait until there's a cheaper release. And if you're curious about what the fuss was back in '02, stream it on HiDive -- as Sentai reminds you.
