POMPO THE CINEPHILE is a riotously funny, lively, snappy roller-coaster ride of a Japanese anime which is a salute to filmmaking. The film, directed by Takayuki Hirao, is no masterpiece by any means, but it's a pleasant way to spend 90 minutes. (Amusingly, the running time also proves to be a gag at the end of the film!) The story is about an aspiring filmmaker, one Gene Dini, who is commissioned to produce a film based on a script by the bossy but brilliant title character. The film makes hilarious allusions to Hollywood (called Nyallywood here), as well as famous stars (Nathalie Woodward and Martin Braddock -- bonus points if you can figure out who these actors are plays off of), while crafting a heartfelt, feel-good tale which manages to be great fun throughout. If you're a film buff and can relate to the challenges of editing (the protagonist's job is to whittle 75 hours of footage into a 90 minute film), this is the movie for you.
