In my 300 volumes of manga, and about as many hours of anime that I have in my collection, this is my favorite item. The series itself is absurdly good, artwork and story both 10/10. Great for people who haven't read manga before, or for those who've read everything. Comedy, Romance, Drama, Action- whatever you're into, this will appeal to you; it's one of the rare works that is truly universal.
Now for the physical details, which this also excels in. When I look for an omnibus, I expect: bigger pages to see more detail in the art, some bonus color pages of artwork or cool info in the back, a distinguished binding that makes it set with grandeur on the shelf, and thanks to Planetes I also expect them to feel like a brick. That's right, despite being a paperback it's solid enough it could probably beat Chuck Norris in a fight. I assume that means they used higher quality paper, but mostly I just like that I can feel my manliness rise by about 40% by merely touching it.
An excellent addition to your library.

Planetes is a classic manga from the excellent Yukimura-sensei, who is also known for his ongoing Vinland Saga series. Join Makoto as he documents the fun times, the sad times, the mundane times, and the absurd times of the space-junk crew aboard the ship DS-12 "Toy Box". The omnibus comes in a slightly larger format compared to most manga (e.g. the shonen/shoujo Viz trims) and in higher quality paper. Each volume is prefaced with 2 or 3 colour pages.
If you are one for a mature and understated character study, then this is the manga for you.
Great art and story

This is one of the best manga I've read. As an omnibus, I really liked that it included some color pages at the beginning of each of the select chapters. Great read for people looking for a manga about space with slice of life.

No matter how much anime you've watched, how many manga you've read. You will not only enjoy this, but you will be surprised as to how good it is. Trust me when I say.. You will not be disappointed, just make sure you grab vol. 2 while you're at it.

I am just recently getting seriously into manga and this, and 20th century boys, have served as the two shining examples of smart, well done manga. This is one of the most emotionally mature, scientifically interesting, and beautifully drawn comics I have ever read. I am waiting for the second to come asap.
