A glimmer of hope in the darkest of times

As someone who is pretty much a novice when it comes to visual novels, OVAs, and recap movies that actually double as full-on sequels, I found “Planetarian” to be a heartbreaking couple of sit-throughs as it took me two nights to go through the whole package. The post-apocalyptic future in which “Planetarian” is set is bleak and hopeless, but its lead characters all end up gaining a positive outlook by learning about the night sky and wanting to share these ideas and discoveries with others. And to think that it all started with a naive robot guide from long ago...

Planetarian is an anime adaption of the Kinetic Visual Novel Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet by Key/Visual Arts. The ONAs cover the main story of a chance encounter between the "Junker" and an android named Yumemi. This VN is very short, typically 4-5 hours for a play through, and because of this the series gets covered pretty well in the 5 episode ONA(OVA).

The Movie, is a condensed retelling of the 5 ONA episodes, with some additional animation in the very beginning and at the end.. focusing on what happened to the "Junker".

Having played the original game, my only real issue with the Anime is timing.. several events have more dramatic impact in the VN form then they do in an anime medium.. but overall its a very good adaptation. I will recommend playing the game.. it can be found in english and legally.

Hoshi Meguri no Uta is on my list as one of my favorite anisongs ever.
