About Pink Manga

Pink features story and art by Kyoko Okazaki.

Yumiko moonlights as a call girl because her day job doesn't pay enough to feed her pet crocodile, Croc. Haru, an aspiring writer who has nothing to say, sleeps with a woman his mother's age not just for the money but to work on his "powers of observation."

When Yumi's step-mom turns out to be Haru's sugar-mommy, it's time for shenanigans. A little bit of drinking, a little bit of blackmail and a visit with Croc is enough to change lives and maybe add some color to a comfortable but bland life.

"Daddy kept Keiko's mom as a pet; she keeps Haru as a pet; I keep Croc as a pet..." Is Yumiko someone else's pet? Is she willing to let someone care for her like that?

A Pillar In Josei Manga for a Reason

by -

Kyoko Okazaki writes compelling manga about terrible people. Pink is littered with awful folks. Yumi is almost intolerable. Her step mother is intolerable through anyone but her young daughters eyes, the half sister is terrible in training, and Haru is involved in a chicken and the egg situation of having two affairs (one for love and one to pay the bills.)
It's a very common theme of what the heart wants but what is comfortable for the characters in the story.

The art is wonderful. The people are not very pretty for the most part, and the lines are shaky but there's something very honest about it. Lots of nudity as is par for the course for Okazaki. It's worth a read and if you are a connoisseur of Josei manga snatch this one up before it goes out of print.

Beautiful Storytelling

by -

A beautiful tale of a motherless daughter trying to find her place and purpose in a cold and indifferent world. The ending was very sad and left me in tears. One of Okazaki'so best works, tells a story that touches on so many layers of, hopefulness, heartbreak and tragedy. Wonderful art and story.
