Interesting but didn’t quiet catch me

by -

I bought this on a whim because I like most things from YenPress and the description was right up my alley. However, reading the manga just wasn’t original. Not being original isn’t an issue but I personally felt that it just never grabbed my attention. The artwork is nice but I can’t say much else. Since I got this when it was first released, two more volumes have come out. It may have possibly become more interesting but at the moment I’m okay with not buying more.

A Generally Good Stay

by -

What begins as a sort of softer introduction to the Ethereal Guardian sub-sub-genre (think "Pet Shop of Horrors") slightly shifts to a more common fantasy of ancient family rivalries and mysterious magicians.

While the aforementioned comparison to "Horrors" is inevitable, "Phantom Tales of the Night" doesn't quite reach the emotional nuance required for its monkey's paw-style approach to mystery-horror. The art style, however, makes a little up for it with some satisfyingly grotesque flourishes.

The cast as a whole act as more of a general slice-of-monster-life ensemble, with enough flirtations with backstories and powersets to carry readers between chapters and volumes. Even if it doesn't reach the heights of its inspirations, "Phantom Tales" does make a decent case for itself with an obvious adoration with the more bizarre side of the ethereal.
