Overlord Light Novel Review

If you love the anime you will love the novel giving you more detail and great story telling

Unique Anime

by -

This is different from most anime/manga/light novels I have come across to this point. Ainz is definitely one of my favorite characters ever. This one is just a taste of the awesomeness to come. Amazing stuff, the wait is going to be murder for future releases, but worth it.

Great LN

by -

Book comes hardcover with great illustrations of the characters, story of a person in the last day of an MMO transported to that game world as an overpowered undead, leading a group of AI's from his old guild seeking if any of his other friends came over to the game world with him.

also includes harem, vampires, twins, ghouls, maids, butlers, elfs, and the greatest wife AI ever

Overlord (Novel) 1: The Undead King

by -

An unconventional retake on being trapped in a video game, where the main character is both the villain and all-powerful.

✓ Unavoidable shift between the main character's human personality to the personality of an evil undead is fascinating, vivid but terse descriptions, steady pace.

✖ Difficult to tell who's talking at times, time difference between side-stories slightly jarring.

Type of Novel: Trapped in Another World

Overlord Novel

by -

Just got to start out with WOW--this is a great light novel. Unlike some of the other light novels the text had few--if any (I don't remember any)--grammatical/structure errors. The story lines somewhat typical right now, a person is trapped in a game, but then it veers into new territory. Our main character (as far as we know) is the only character trapped in the game, he isn't a hero in the typical sense--with a sword, shield, and a sexy body--, and he isn't here to save the world. The characters in here were really enjoyable. The story line is good too. Best of all it doesn't leave on a big cliffhanger like others do but it does leave you wondering what will happen next.

It's As Good As It Looks

by

I'll put it quite simply, if there's ever a novel to judge by the cover it's this one. It's beautiful and has downright became one of my favorite series. So-Bin's illustrations are some of the best LN illustrations I've ever seen, and Maruyama's world building skill is some of the finest I've seen.

Pleasantly suprised!

by -

Found out about this book after watching the anime the story itself is similar to the anime adaptation some differences is that their is alot more internal dialogue where Ainz goes through his thought process before coming to a conclusion and the story goes more deeper into the actual mechanics of the game like levels, classes, and skills etc. all that good stuff as an added bonus somewhere near the back of the book you can see the main characters actual game stats which i found very interesting overall i would definitely recommend this book as few stray from their usual manga picture type books.

Love the anime? The Read the Book!

by -

As a fan of the Overlord Anime, I can't help but re-watch episodes to try and grasp the depth of the characters shown. That being said, after hearing about the light novel source material, I decided to try them.
I have not looked back!

Elements that the anime had to simplify due to time are expanded. Ains' self doubt comes across clearly, as does the raw devotion of the guardians of the tomb. But, unlike the anime, it comes across as much more desperate. Ains is the last of the supreme ones, and they are absolutely terrified that he will abandon them as well if their efforts are not exemplary.
The more he tries to show them favor, the more they simply believe it to be a part of his innate divine patience, which they cannot allow to ever run out.
Plus, the accompanying art work is amazing! It's raw but powerful, and the character sheets at the end are just dang impressive. So if you enjoyed the Anime, I cannot emphasize how important reading the book truly is!

Worth buying, would buy again

by

If you read a review for a series you should start with the first book.

Trapped in a video game, MMO, but in a new 'world'. That is the starting of this premise, but with a huge twist. The protagonist of this story is not a hero for the 'good' and 'righteous'. He's a regular guy that ended up being stuck with the role as the 'supreme one' in an environment that he and his guild-mates created in the game. It just so happens that they are all 'monsters' and as a general rule dislike and distrust humans. There is a lot of insinuated brutality in these novels and much still comes to the forefront.

The story presents the protagonist's struggle to cope with his new position and learning everything there is about this new world, as well as the search for any lost guild-mates. He will stop at nothing to secure their safety, even if it means conquering the world.

The Begining of Greatness

by

if you were like me and only knew of this because of the anime then i highly recommend reading the books they offer more incite into the minds of the characters. Though season 1 of the anime covers much of what happens in this book there more to the story that you didn't know. for those who like to read fantasy this is an awesome addition to your library having elements of DND and reverences to MMO's that's not to say this story is about an MMO but far from it

So much in 1 book

by -

This Book Is Amazing. there is so much that I could tell you about it but that ould take an entire paper. ill try to stick to the main points. although it is a somewhat hard read, it is still very fulfilling. the book is SUPER sturdy and comes with allot of extras. it has full colored pages scattered within it with amazing art. it also has a poster inside it believe it or not. it is connected to it and folds out with the main characters on it. that's what partly makes it great. the outer paper shell dies and to get allot of damage but if you don't move it out of your room it should be fine. if you ever do take it with you, just know that it can be taken off and saved from more damage. on top of that if you do take it off, it still looks fantastic.

This is without a doubt my favorite book series. I fell in love with the anime and was pleasantly surprised when I found out there was a light novel. The world building and details are magnificent. If you enjoy a great read, I will whole heatedly suggest this book.

This series is amazing!

by

I've never read a light novel in my life but because I watched the anime, I decided to buy the this. If you enjoyed the anime, you will definitely enjoy this! The light novels come with amazing art and the story telling is very descriptive. I watched the anime a little while ago and reading the light novel was like watching the anime in my head all over again!

More depth for the characters.

by -

I started off watching seasons 1-3 of the anime and decided to get the LN series as well. I am blown away by the quality of the art in the book along with the poster like quality of some pages. I really like how much more depth there is to Ainz during the story as more of his inner thoughts show up. The anime kind of glosses over his transition from human to basically unfeeling undead king of his domain. Each of the side characters are also more fleshed out and the story as a whole is more cohesive than in the anime. Only real negative is the dialogue is sometimes hard to follow as it swaps characters some times every line or it stays the same (hope that makes sense) Overall a great buy and definitely worth the extra price for hardcover.

Another Great Add to your Collection

by -

Satoru Suzuki's character reminds me a lot of mine when I played MMOs. Ah. The nastalgia. The concept of being placed INside the game, blurring fantasy and reality is something I would love to experience! Reading through this makes me want to buy the rest. Great read!

Hall of fame for LNs starts here

by

Overlord is seriously one of the best LNs out there. If you haven't read it yet then please do it. You won't regret it. The MC(Ainz) is very relatable and hilarious. I've never re-read LN series before, but I have reread Overlord Vol. 1- Vol.13 three times. It is just that good.
