Beautiful and refreshing
by Candice
My friend recently turned me onto this after sharing some of the pages of the gorgeous art, and I got hooked by the surprisingly realistic portrayal of the themes. The internal struggle and deflection of a character fighting against admitting what they believe will be the end of a 'comfortable' social persona is refreshing and a good look into the feelings of someone coming to terms with their sexuality. I dont really see this type of portrayal in japanese media so while there are some convos or ideologies that may seem jarring, it feels really authentic and doesnt pull its punches.
Shimanami Tasogare feels like a great glimpse into LGBT topics specifically how they relate to japanese culture, and doesn't have any focus on the sexual aspect as many are wont to do. Give this, regrettably, short series a chance and I'm sure it will be a great addition to any shelf!
Powerful story
by Anna
This series handles so many different issues of identity so well, and I could see many of my own real-life experiences reflected in the characters and the journeys they took. I think readers should be warned that this is not always the happiest story, and while it isn't graphic there are some scenes that are pretty tough to read - this is not really a romance. But despite the darker parts I found the overall message to be one of hope and self-acceptance, and I would highly recommend to anyone who is a member (or supporter) of the LGBT+ community. The art is also gorgeous and I especially love the cover designs and color choices.

Beautiful + emotional queer story
by MK -
I’ve been very happy at the increase of gay/queer stories over the past decade, but few have the impact and subtly of this one. I often feel like a lgbtq story is overly pandering or a little too 101 (more meant for the straight reader). This manga series, however, handles it so well.
The stories are realistic and relatable- and it has the perfect dash of magical realism that feels light and emotive without distracting from the seriousness of the story. The art is gorgeous and the emotion just floods off the pages. I definitely cried a few times while reading!
When I finished reading the series I immediately bought a second set just so I could have a set to keep and a set to lend to friends! I want everyone in my queer friend group to read it :)
