About Orient Manga Volume 1

Orient manga volume 1 features story and art by Shinobu Ohtaka, the creator of Magi.

At age 10, best friends Musashi and Kojiro sat in excited silence as Kojiro’s father spun tales of evil demons who preyed on the innocent, and the warriors who defeated them. Practicing swordplay, the two swear an oath to become the strongest in the world. But as they grow up, Kojiro turns cynical, and Musashi comes to realize that he can’t turn back 150 years of demon rule on his own. He’s being called a prodigy with a pickaxe, and he’s almost ready to settle for a life of labor. Yet he can’t shake the feeling that he still has a responsibility to act…and, soon, the injustices of his world will force his hand…

Fun First Volume

This was a really fun read, with tropes that get twisted. By reading the plot, I assumed it would be common demon slaying type of story, but it's clear that it's not. I'm definitely going to pick up the next few volumes to see where it's going.

The art is beautiful, and I like the inner turmoils the main protagonists go through, and how it's depicted.

If you liked Magi, I'm sure you'll like this.

This is a review solely based on volume 1. If the cover doesn't instantly pull you in, then surely the story will. Although, it is not much different from the many tropes of "evil demons, and the main character goes on an adventure to slay them", Orient does a little spin on it where the samurai heroes are portrayed as evil beings. And the main character is determined to believe otherwise, leading to his strong will.
Overall, I finished this in one sitting and I think the following volumes will have companionship as a factor whether good or bad.
Also, the cute chibis the mangaka draws are back!

Not Magi, but fantastic in it's own way.

While Orient is written and drawn by the same mangaka behind Magi, don't expect it to be like Magi going in. While Magi is similar to FMA (fantasy series that are interested in world-building and in-universe politics to drive character development), Orient is similar to Black Clover and 7 Deadly Sins (fun, simple shonen battle series's set in fantasy worlds)

With that expectation in mind, Orient does what it does the best I've seen yet. Ohtaka's art is absolutely amazing, with great character designs and showcasing large, bombastic action while still making it easy to follow for the reader. The characters, while simple, are a lot of fun and very enduring without being annoying (something many shonen's struggle with), and the world is very interesting for a fantasy series.

Overall, this is a great start to what looks to be a great series. I'm looking forward to the next volumes. Highly recommended if you are looking for a simple and fun shonen battle manga.

Excellent first volume

Fist let me start off with saying I have no experience with the magi series at all so I went into this with no prior knowledge of the author. Even though I didn’t have this knowledge I still really enjoyed the first volume. It’s very action packed and easy to follow. The main characters do seem like your classic shonen characters. The one being overly energetic and the other being edgy just for the sake of being edgy. But I don’t really mind this so it didn’t bother me. That being said I know it does for some so that’s why I included that.

Let’s touch on the art. The art is very good and helped to immures me into the story. I hope that the artist can keep up the good work and keep bringing us quality work.

If I had to tell you to check this out or not I would say absolutely do. I don’t know how long the series is going to be or if the rest of the series can keep up with this banger of a first volume but if it can it will be a legendary story.
