About OLDMAN Manhua Volume 1

OLDMAN Manhua Volume 1 features story and art by Chang Sheng.

A beautiful queen rules her country with an iron fist. Unmarried and without an heir, she adopts orphans as a way to prove that even commoners can reign as kings. Yet, as the years progress, she shows no sign of aging. Only one man knows the dark secret to her eternal youth: Oldman, a bearded magician the queen has locked in her darkest dungeon. One night, Oldman steps through the bars of his prison and disappears before the queen's very eyes. Enraged, she sends her army after him in a desperate campaign to keep her secret hidden.

Having tricked the guards (and not actually having left the dungeon), he rescues a neighboring prisoner, a sword maiden rebel whose arms and legs were amputated, and left to rot in her cell. Upon taking her to an underground "doctor" who fits her with mechanical arms and legs, they together vow to take revenge on the Queen that wronged them.

The beautiful artwork and elegant story-making of Chang-Sheng's Oldman propelled it into award-winning national fame; now, this iconic comic is ready for the global audience it deserves.

Oldman Has Great Art and a Fine Premise, But So Far Has Stumbled in a Few Key Places.

by -

First and foremost, the story follows the titular Sean Connery-esque character of Oldman as he escapes from a cruel, eternally youthful queen. He allegedly knows magic and quickly forms a party consisting of Rebecca, a quadriplegic warrior who has had her limbs replaced with medieval-mechanical prosthetics; Doctor Vincent, the doctor/mechanic who designed these prosthetics; and later Heleh, who claims to be clairvoyant.

While the characters may look good, the trouble comes when they need to speak.
I can't say whether the original text is just poorly written and paced or whether this is a botched translation job but either way the dialog feels stilted.

It is important to note how this book is printed.
I believe it is a manhwa, and as such is printed in the western left to right page format however the panels are read from right to left, a la eastern manga.
So Oldman sits in a strange middle ground that will make both comic and manga readers needing a moment to adjust while reading.
